1975 BMW 2002

Introduced at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 2002 Turbo was among the first models to be developed by BMW's legendary Motorsport GmbH division and predates the M-series cars. It was BMW's first turbocharged production car and among the first turbocharged production cars in the world. The road-going 2002 incorporated lessons learned from the forced induction 2002 which had helped Dieter Quester win the 1969 European Touring Car Championship. With the help of slide throttle bodies and a single KKK turbocharger, the 1,990cc single overhead camshaft four-cylinder engine delivered 170 horsepower and 240 NM of torque. A four-speed manual gearbox was standard as was a limited-slip differential but could be equipped with performance and comfort-enhancing features such as a five-speed transmission, a lockable glove box lid, and 6 x 13-inch alloy wheels. The 2002 Turbo was capable of 131 mph and could sprint from zero-to-sixty mph in 6.9 seconds. The 2002 Turbo had a thicker front anti-roll bar, height-adjustable rear springs, Bilstein shock absorbers, and strengthened trailing arms, hubs, and stub axles in comparison to its 2002 tii sibling. They also received ventilated front disc brakes and larger rear drums, and its floorpan incorporated thicker front frame rails, reinforced rear suspension mounts, a bespoke front panel, and an altered boot floor.

Distinguishable features of the 2002 Turbo included a deep front air dam, bolt-on wheel arch extensions (Motorsport stripes were optional), and a boot lid-mounted rubber spoiler. Available colors were either Chamonix White or Polaris Silver both teamed with Black leatherette upholstery.

Production of the 2002 Turbo lasted from January of 1974 to July of 1975 with 1,660 production examples built plus twelve pre-production examples. Additionally, 422 examples of the 2002 tii version were built before production ended in 1974. The BMW tii was equipped with the fuel-injected, 128-horsepower engine from the 2000 tii. Styling of the 2002 tii was similar to the 2002 series, including a chrome and rubber trim strip that traversed the body side, between the two-wheel openings, plus it had rubber bumper inserts. The normally-aspirated 2.0-liter BMW 2002, produced from 1971 into 1976, had a blackout 'kidney' grille, blackout side grilles with dual horizontal bright strips, and two round headlamps.

The 1975 BMW 2002 was available as a sedan and cabriolet with pricing that began at approximately $5,940. The base engine was an overhead-cam four-cylinder engine with an aluminum head. It displaced 121.3 cubic inches and produced nearly 100 horsepower. The 2002tii models had the same 121-3cid engine fitted with a Kugelfischer mechanical fuel system replacing the Solex carburetor. Horsepower was rated at 125 hp with 127 foot-lbs of torque. It came standard with a four-speed manual gearbox with disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear.
