2005 Pontiac Vibe

VIBE HAS NEW LOOK AND NEW FEATURES FOR '05

2005 Pontiac Vibe
Pontiac's trendsetting and versatile Vibe continues to attract new, youthful customers – sales increased 45 percent in 2003 – many entering a Pontiac showroom for the first time. Vibe's head-turning design, thoughtful capability and exciting performance are enhanced for 2005 with a restyled look and added features.

The 2005 Vibe features a restyled front fascia and grille that carry styling cues from the 2006 Pontiac Solstice roadster. Like the Solstice, the '05 Vibe's new appearance characterizes the contemporary performance look of other recently introduced Pontiac models, including the G6 sedan, GTO and Bonneville GXP. All of these new products strengthen the momentum of Pontiac's design and performance renaissance.

In addition to the new look, the '05 Vibe also has the following new features:

• Base engine meets 2007 Últra-Low Emissions (ÚLEV II) standards

2005 Pontiac Vibe• Available 'Moon & Tunes' package with integrated sub-woofer

2005 Pontiac Vibe
• Available StabiliTrak vehicle stability enhancement system

2005 Pontiac Vibe• Available leather seating

• New fabric patterns in Slate and Graphite colors

• Standard passive suppression advanced air bag system on passenger side

• Available side curtain air bag system coupled with side thorax air bags (in seat)

• Available programmable automatic door locks (available with automatic transmission and power package)

• Tire pressure monitor standard on GT and AWD models

• Available OnStar (with one-year Safe & Sound services).

2005 Pontiac Vibe• Performance look and feel

The restyled look of the '05 Vibe enhances an already strong performance aesthetic. Its integrated roof rack contributes to the sleek, distinctive wedge appearance. Vibe also features traditional Pontiac styling cues, including 'cat-eye' headlamps and a wide, muscular stance. Recessed fog lamps and rear cornering lamps, short overhangs and large wheels and tires project an aggressive, ground-hugging stance while optimizing vehicle stability.
Vibe's performance look is backed up by its powertrain. The base model comes with a 1.8L I-4 engine which produces 130 horsepower (97 kw) and 125 lb.-ft. of torque (170 Nm). The dual-overhead-cam engine employs variable valve timing to continuously optimize performance and fuel economy; it now meets 2007 Últra-Low Emission Vehicle (ÚLEV II) standards. ( posted on conceptcarz.com) EPA-estimated fuel mileage is 29 mpg city / 36 mpg highway with a manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the base engine and a four-speed automatic is available. The all-wheel-drive version is available exclusively with the automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

The high-performance GT engine produces 170 horsepower (127 kw) and 127 lb.-ft. of torque (175 Nm), pushing the Vibe from 0-60 mph in just over 8 seconds. The GT engine's VVTL-i system increases the intake and exhaust valve lift when engine speed is high, boosting power output and improving fuel efficiency.

Vibe customers also can add a supercharger to boost the power of their vehicle. Introduced last year and available through GM SPO, the supercharger kit is designed specifically for Vibe's base 1.8L engine and is fully warranted for the same period as the Vibe at the time of vehicle purchase.

Pumping out up to 7.5 pounds of boost, the Roots-type supercharger gives the engine an approximately 30 percent increase in horsepower and 18 percent increase in torque. It is available for either manual-transmission or automatic-equipped Vibe models with the 1ZZ engine.

Suspension
Ride and handling are integral components of Vibe's performance package. The front suspension is designed with a leading-arm MacPherson strut with a high caster angle. The rear suspensions of the base and GT models have a twist-beam design. This ensures ample wheel travel, improving riding comfort and quietness while delivering outstanding handling and driving stability.

All-wheel-drive models are equipped with an independent rear suspension with a compact double-wishbone design. This suspension improves ride comfort and provides outstanding handling and stability to complement the sure-footed all-wheel-drive system.

Vibe also is available with StabiliTrak for the first time in 2005.

StabiliTrak assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver's intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver's use of the brake pedal. StabiliTrak uses an accelerator pedal position sensor, a brake master cylinder pressure sensor and a steering wheel angle sensor as inputs to interpret the driver's desired path and whether to accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. StabiliTrak also uses these sensors plus a lateral accelerometer and yaw rate sensor to determine the vehicle's actual path. If the difference between the driver's desired path and the vehicle's actual path becomes great enough, StabiliTrak takes appropriate action to assist the driver with maintaining the desired path. If the vehicle begins to 'snowplow,' or understeer, StabiliTrak applies the inside rear brake to help turn the vehicle. If the vehicle begins to fishtail, or oversteer, StabiliTrak applies the outside front brake to straighten the vehicle. StabiliTrak is integrated with the traction control and ABS systems.

Brakes for the base and AWD models include a vented front disc/rear drum combination, while the GT model has four-wheel discs with solid rotors at the rear. Vibe models offer three types of wheels – 16-inch steel, 16-inch alloy and 17-inch alloy. Tires include a 16-inch P205/55R16 all-season tire and an optional Dunlop 17-inch P215/50R17 tire. Seventeen-inch tire and wheels are available on both base and GT models.

A tire pressure monitor system is standard on Vibe GT and AWD models, and is available on the base model.

Interior refinement
Vibe's cockpit-style interior is designed to provide a comfortable, safe driving environment and user-friendly convenience. Leather seating is now available in the Vibe and there are new fabric patterns in Slate and Graphite colors.

Vibe features a 115-volt standard power outlet with a wall-type plug. Located in the front console, it enables owners to plug in a laptop computer, cell phone charger, portable vacuum, air compressor or electric shaver without an adapter. This even allows passengers to check and send wireless e-mail from the Vibe.

The front passenger seat folds flat into a worktable or to help accommodate cargo up to 8 feet (20.3 cm) long. Vibe also features a 12-volt power outlet on the dashboard, as well as a console that contains two cupholders, a small covered storage bin, a larger covered lower bin under the console lid and a coinholder.

When it comes to audio, Vibe provides a host of infotainment systems, including XM Satellite Radio. XM Satellite Radio (continental Ú.S. only) provides more than 120 coast-to-coast, digital-quality channels of original commercial-free music and premier news, sports and talk as well as advanced traffic and weather information for select major metropolitan areas nationwide. Consumers can subscribe to the basic service for $9.99 a month. In addition, GM customers with GMAC financing can choose to include the XM subscription in their car payments.

Also available for Vibe in '05 is the thumping 'Moon & Tunes' package, which combines a power-operated moonroof with a stunning audio system anchored by a new, integrated sub-woofer.

Advanced safety features
Vibe provides an array of crash-avoidance and crash-protection benefits normally associated with larger, higher-priced vehicles, with two-stage dual frontal air bags and available seat-mounted side air bags. All-wheel drive is available and an anti-lock brake system (ABS) is standard on AWD and GT models and available on the base vehicle. Vibe features a large safety cage and crumple zones, with the frame and body panels constructed of high-strength steel designed to absorb energy in a crash and resist passenger-compartment intrusion.

Safety belts remain the primary and most effective form of occupant protection. All seating positions in 2005 Vibe models have three-point safety belts. Front inboard belts are mounted to the seats so the buckle moves with the seat during adjustments. Retractors for front outboard seating positions have built-in load limiters that allow a controlled amount of give in the belt, thereby reducing the peak load on the chest during the 'ride down' in a crash.

Vibe also has dual-stage frontal air bags for supplemental protection for front seat passengers. Dual-stage frontal air bags are designed to help reduce the risk of air bag-induced injury. When the air bag system's control unit detects an impact, it determines whether the crash is severe enough to trigger a deployment, and whether the primary amount of inflation is sufficient. The primary stage alone will deploy in most frontal impacts requiring the supplemental protection of an air bag, while a secondary stage is designed to deploy in more severe frontal collisions.

Optional head curtain side air bags act like a protective curtain when deployed, unfolding from the roof rail between the A-pillar and side window header. When the bag deploys in a moderate to severe side impact, it is angled somewhat toward the window to help provide protection for front- and rear-seat outboard passengers.

Vibe also has pretensioners in the front safety belt system that deploy at the same time as the frontal air bags to take up slack in the safety belt webbing. Pretensioners also help reduce the amount of occupant movement in the event of a crash to help reduce the risk of injury.

Vibe also is equipped with LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system anchors for child safety seats. This system provides two lower anchors and a top tether anchor to be used to secure a child seat to the vehicle seat structure. These anchorages are designed to make it easier to properly install compatible child safety seats.

OnStar-equipped Vibe models feature new sixth generation hardware with digital and analog coverage. OnStar's Gen 6 hardware also includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the Únited States and Canada. Úsing the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Personal Calling that allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls using a powerful three-watt digital/analog system and external antenna for greater reception.

Other safety features and options include a DVD-based navigation system, programmable door locks, remote keyless entry, anti-theft system, child safety door locks, a power window lockout switch, daytime running lamps and delay-entry lighting.
