For 1997, the Subaru Impreza received ABS as standard and the 2.2-liter engine gained more power and torque. The suspension height was raised and the Outback Sport was given styling modifications including to the front bumper, hood, and grille. Pricing began at $14,290 and rose to $18,490 for the Outback Sport station wagon. The base engine was a horizontally opposed, overhead-cam four-cylinder engine rated at 115 horsepower. A 135 cubic-inch version offered 165 horsepower. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard with a four-speed automotive available for an additional cost.
