1952 Packard Pacifica Concept

Saga Magazine held a design contest in the early 1950s and this was the winning design, later featured on the magazine cover. However, it was never built by Packard and would remain a design for many years. In 1996, a California-based builder was at the Paris Retromobile and found renderings of the 1950s Packard 'Pininfarina GT' fastback. He acquired the renderings and, subsequently, befriended wood sculptor Peter Portugal who agreed to help build the two-passenger retractable hardtop that had won the Saga Magazine design contest. Peter began by using a frame from a 1951 Packard convertible, and the floorplan from a 1951 sedan. The body was sectioned three inches, and the windshield was moved back by four inches. The trunk lid was actually the hood turned backward and shortened by seven inches. The top was made from Plexiglass. Power was from a stock 327 straight-eight and backed by an Ultramatic transmission.
