1978 Porsche 911 SC

Porsche installed a larger horizontally opposed, overhead-cam six-cylinder engine that now displaced 182.6 cubic-inches and offered 172 SAE HP. The prior year's engine displaced 163.9 CID and offered 157 SAE horsepower. The new engine was identical in size initially used in the 1977 Porsche 911 Turbo. The engine received a new crankshaft with larger bearings and was given an aluminum crankcase, replacing the prior magnesium unit.

Optional equipment included a 'whale tail' rear spoiler. A five-speed manual was standard along with front and rear disc brakes. Body styles included a 2-door Coupe with 2+2 seating or a Targa version. Pricing began at $19,500 for the coupe while the targa had a base price of $20,775. 4,719 examples of the 911 SC Coupe were produced in 1978, along with 3,564 examples of the Targa.
