1969 Porsche 911T

Production of the original Porsche 911 lasted from Autumn of 1963 through 1989. First appearing in 1963 at the Frankfurt Show as the '901', the name was changed shortly after production proper commenced in 1964 had become the '911' following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. It used the preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout but switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's Volkswagen-based suspension in favor of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. The 911 was succeeded by a modified version, internally referred to as Porsche 964, but still sold as Porsche 911, as are current models. From its inception, the 911 was used by privateers and the factory for racing, rallying, and other types of competition. They were among the most successful competition car ever, especially when their variations are included, including the 911-derived 935 which won the 24 Hours du Mans and other major sports cars races outright.

1963 was a productive year for Porsche, with the introduction of the 911 and its acquisition of coachbuilder Reutter, which had produced most of the bodies for the Type 356 models. With its purchase, Porsche ensured continuity of body supply for the forthcoming 911 and 912. The success of the 911 quickly outpaced Reuterr's capacity, so Porsche asked coachbuilder Karmann of Osnabrück, for whom they had a longstanding relationship, with helping with production, starting in 1966 with the 912.

In 1968, while Porsche was working on prototypes of the forthcoming long-wheelbase 911, Karmann started building the 911T.

In its first incarnation, Porsche's single-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled flat-six engine displaced 1,991cc and produced 130bhp. It was progressively developed and enlarged, and would eventually grow to over 3.0-liters, and in turbocharged guides, produced in excess of 300 horsepower.

The first of numerous upgrades to the perennial 911 came in 1966, two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the 911S. Distinguishable features included Fuchs's five-spoke alloy wheels and a heavily revised engine developing 160 bhp. The 911T (Touring) followed in 1967 as the new base model and was initially equipped with a 2.0-liter engine offering 110 horsepower.

Production of 'B Programme' cars began in August of 1968 with Karmann involved in their production for only one year, during which time the Osnabrück firm built 3,561 911Ts and 1,014 911Es. The 'B' series featured an increase in the wheelbase size from 2,211 millimeters to 2,268mm. It was the lengthening of the wheelbase that helped overcome the 'snap over-steer' for which the earlier generation of cars had become renowned. Flared wheel openings allowed for wider tries, weight distribution was improved, different axle half-shafts were installed, and the incorporation of a lightweight magnesium crankcase.

The 911T was the 'base' model with the coupe version priced at $5,800 and the Targa at $6,315 (in the United States). Power was from a horizontally-opposed, air-cooled, six-cylinder engine with overhead camshafts, two Weber carburetors, eight main bearings, a displacement of 121.5 cubic inches (1991 cc), and produced 125 (SAE) horsepower at 5,800 RPM. The 911E coupe listed for $7,000 while the Targa was priced at $7,515. Early examples received Borge self-leveling front struts, and the engine was the same as powering the 911T but with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, a higher 9.1:1 compression ratio, and a horsepower rating of 158 (SAE) at 6,500 RPM. Both the 911T and the 911E used either a four-speed, five-speed, or Sportomatic. The 911S used a five-speed manual gearbox and its engine was the same as the 911E but with a compression ratio of 9.9:1 and it developed 190 (SAE) horsepower. The 911S Coupe was priced at $7,700 and the Targa at $8,215.
