The Porsche 911 had hit its stride by the early 1970s and its iconic shape has become legendary. Porsche marketed the 911 E as the most luxurious and comfortable model in the 911 range, positioned between the 911 T and 911 S, replacing the one-year-only 911 L. 'E' stood for Einspritzung—German for 'injection'—as the 911 E was, like the higher-performance 911 S, fitted with a Bosch mechanical fuel injection system.

Auction entries : 5The Porsche 911 was introduced in 1963 at the Frankfurt Show and remained in production until 1989, one of the few models to lay claim to remain in production for twenty-eight years. It was originally known as the '901,' but shortly after production proper commenced in 1964 had become the '911' following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. Porsche's new sports car retained the preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout but switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's Volkswagen-based suspension in favor of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. The first incarnation of the SOHC, air-cooled flat six-cylinder engine displaced 1,991cc and developed 130 bhp. It was progressively enlarged and developed, eventually growing in excess of 3.0 liters and, in turbocharged guise, produced well over 300 horsepower. Its long and stellar history was formed both on and off the race track, reinforced by its surprising performance from its small displacement rear-engine. Known as 'giant killers' these nimble and lightweight cars with exceptional handling could outperform cars with much higher horsepower figures. This combination gave Porsches their truly unique driving characteristics and solidified their dedicated following of Porsche enthusiasts. The 911 has continuously evolved into a more sophisticated, powerful, and capable driving machine, as well as a reliable and usable car.

Auction entries : 1The Porsche 911 has proven itself capable as a Grand Tourer, circuit racer, or rally car. The 911s first appearance as a rally car began in 1965, as a Works entry, on the Monte Carlo Rally. Group victories were achieved in the European Rally Championship in 1966 and 1967, with works driver Vic Elford securing the overall European Championship in the latter. During the 1968 season, the works-entered 911s won eight of the 15 European Championship rounds with works driver Pauli Toivonen taking the European title, emphatically established its credentials as a frontline rally car. In 1970, the 911 earned Porsche its first World Championship of Makes. The first of countless upgrades to the perennial 911 came in 1966, just two years after production had commenced, with the introduction of the 911S. Distinguishable by its Fuchs five-spoke alloy wheels, the 'S' used a heavily revised engine developed 160 horsepower. In 1979, the wheelbase and rear track grew, while the overall length remained the same as the previous cars. Mechanical fuel injection debuted this year as well as in top-of-the-line 911S and the new 911E. The first of many enlargements to the air-cooled, flat-six engine occurred in 1970, growing to 2.2-liters. By this time the models on offer had stabilized at three: the 911T, 911E, and 911S, all of which were available as either a closed coupé or Targa convertible. With the arrival of the 2.2-liter engine, it used a common type of cylinder head, with the differing power outputs being determined principally by valve timing rather than valve sizes as had been the case hitherto. The Porsche 911E, first seen in the 2.0-liter guise in 1969, was designed to be more comfortable and useable than the S model, but not as soft as the 911T. It received a leather-wrapped steering wheel, velour carpeting, vented brake discs, and golden script on the rear deck. The 2,195cc single overhead camshaft flat six-cylinder engine with Bosch Mechanical Fuel Injection produced 155 horsepower (DIN) at 6,200 RPM. The engine was backed by a five-speed manual gearbox, the braking was handled by ventilated disc brakes (first introduced on the previous 911S), and the suspension was independent in the front and rear. The self-leveling hydro-pneumatic front suspension contributed to the Porsche 911 L model's comfortable ride and the fuel-injected engine made it more suitable to the strict North American emission regulations.

The B Series had entered production in August of 1968 and remained in production until July of 1969). Among the list of available options include the Fuchs five-spoke alloy wheels and a rear exhaust apron. The 'U.S. Equipment' options normally included a speedometer in miles per hour, front and rear lighting that met DOT regulations, and sealed-beam headlamps. The Porsche factory Appearance Group added full instrumentation, premium quality carpet, and wider rubber trim on the bumpers, along with bumper guards and stainless rocker panel covers. The interior included bucket seats, a black vinyl dashboard, Blaupunkt radio, and instrumentation positioned ahead of the driver.
