For 1988, the Volkswagen Golf received the 16-valve engine that was found in the Scirocco 16V. The overhead-cam four-cylinder engine delivered 123 horsepower and 120 foot-lbs of torque. The base engine produced 85 horsepower while the GTi version produced just over 100 horsepower. A diesel engine was also avaialble, delivering 52 horsepower. Pricing began at $8,200 and rose to $12,240 for the 16-valve version for the GTi.
