In 1974, Jaguar introduced a long-wheelbase version of the XJ6 sedan called the XJ6L. Pricing for the XJ6 was $10,900 while the XJ6L was listed at $11,500. Power came from a dual-overhead-cam six-cylinder engine displacing 258.4 cubic-inches and offering 150 (net) horsepower. A three-speed gearbox was standard and disc brakes could be found at all four corners. The XJ6L had a longer wheelbase and an additional four inches was added to the rear of the front door. Most of the XJ6L were sold in the United States.Standard equipment included tinted glass, power windows, leather-faced rear seats, deep pile carpeting, fully-reclining leather-faced front seats with adjustable head restraints, and a parcel shelf and locking glove box. Whitewall Dunlop E70VR15 sport tires were standard with ventilated chrome disc wheels.

Changes included a new padded steering wheel, automatic climate control air conditioning, and the headlamp and wiper controls were moved to stalks attached to the steering column. In the front were a shallow front grille and a new rubber bumper.
