The 1984 BMW 528e was the company's mid-range 4-door sedan and had a base price of $24,500. Power was from an overhead-cam six-cylinder engine displacing 164 cubic inches and offering 121 horsepower. It came standard with a five-speed manual gearbox or could be purchased with an optional four-speed automatic. Standard equipment included power steering, four-wheel disc brakes, electric rear-window defroster, AM/FM stereo with cassette player, power windows, telescopic steering column, tinted glass, central door locking, power mirrors, fog lamps, cruise control, and driver's seat tilt and height adjustment. Other features included an electric sliding steel sunroof, light alloy wheels, and intermittent wipers.
