Ron Fellows Named Grand Marshal as WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca Gears up for Weeklong Celebration of Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

August 8, 2023 by WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca

Week Concludes with Corkscrew Hillclimb & CommunityDay on Sunday, Aug. 20

The clock is counting down to one of the most anticipated weeks of the year for car enthusiasts, automakers, sponsors and local Monterey businesses. WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca kicks off this Monterey Car Week by naming Corvette legend Ron Fellows as the Grand Marshal for the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion

With a special edition Corvette named after him, Fellows can also count 27 wins, three American Le Mans Series championships, two wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and four consecutive years as the 'Most Popular Driver' from ALMS fans to his record. Arguably one of North America's most versatile and successful road racing drivers, Ron Fellows was inducted into the Corvette Hall of Fame in 2011, the Canadian Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2012 and was called to the Order of Canada in 2020.

'I'm excited to make it back out to WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Corvette,' said Fellows. 'This will be my fourth time visiting the historic races and it's never a bad trip to be on the spectacular Monterey Peninsula.' Fellows will be giving out the Awards on Saturday including the coveted Spirit of Monterey and the famed John Fitch Award. 'I'm honored at the opportunity to be named Grand Marshal and will cross my fingers I have an opportunity to get behind a wheel of one of the cars on track.'

Celebrations begin with the 14th annual Monterey Race Car Show held downtown Friday, Aug. 11. Thirty non-street-legal race cars will leave WeatherTech Raceway under CHP escort to enjoy the car show among fans and families to kick off the Monterey Pre-Reunion, Aug. 11 and 12, and Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Aug. 16-19.

The Race Car Show and Monterey Pre-Reunion are preludes to the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which was named last year's Motorsport Event of the Year by the internationally acclaimed Historic Motoring Awards. Visitors will experience some of the world's best authentic and historic race cars in 14 different groups at speed. And this year, there is a special observance of Corvette and its 70th anniversary.

Each of the 14 race groups will have daily 25-minute sessions to ensure fans can experience all eras of motorsport history. And in between sessions are special exhibition laps, vehicles making their World or North American debuts, and much more. The full schedule may be viewed HERE.

To wrap up the week's festivities, the Corkscrew Hillclimb & Community Day returns for its second year to present a different form of racing on Sunday, Aug. 20. These racers compete against the clock, and their own talents, by launching from the Start/Finish line reverse course toward Turn 11 and up through the Rainey Curve and cresting the Corkscrew as they take the checkered flag. The drivers had a blast and the fans lining the open pit lane and fences along the Corkscrew cheered their favorites. With an abundance of fan activities and family fun attractions, Sunday will be the ideal way for Central Valley residents to enjoy the culmination of another successful Monterey Car Week.
