Quotes and news from the Spanish Grand Prix Race

May 10, 2015

DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: 7th, Start Position: 10th

'I am more satisfied today as we achieved everything we could, and seventh was the maximum I could get out of the car. There were some parts of the race that were encouraging, but we're still further off than where we want to be, but we'll keep pushing. We came here with upgrades this weekend but they didn't give us what we were expecting, so that's something we'll keep working on. We're still a fair bit behind Williams at the moment but I think we have a good chance to close the gap a bit further in Monaco.'

DANIIL KVYAT, Finish Position: 10th, Start Position: 8th

Formula 1 Image 'We didn't have enough pace today. I had a poor opening lap, dropping a few places and from then on that compromised my race. Because here at this track, if you lose places at the start, it's almost game over, as it is so hard to get close enough to pass. I had a nice battle with Sainz towards the end, but now we will wait and see what the Stewards say about how it ended. We need to improve the car in every area at the moment. On the positive side, both our cars finished the race, which is good on the reliability front. This was a bad day for me, so now I just want to look ahead to Monaco in the hope we can be more competitive there.'

CHRISTIAN HORNER, Team Principal

'Daniel drove a strong race today, and he did a great job to extract everything he could out of the car to finish seventh which is where we are for the moment. Dany had a tricky first lap which landed him in traffic, and as a result used up his tires fairly quickly and needed an early pit stop. He drove a solid race over the next two stints to cross the line in tenth place. We'll have to wait and see what the outcome of the Stewards is regarding the incident with Carlos.'

DANIIL KVYAT, Position: 8, (3rd Practice – 9, 1:27.313)

'I did my best and so I can't be happy with P8. Maybe we have not got the most out of our upgrades just yet, but I'm sure the team can turn things around. At least this weekend, we have had a clean free practice and qualifying and, step by step we will get there. Nevertheless, tomorrow is the day that matters – the thing we are all fighting for and there is still everything to play for. So I can definitely aim to score some points starting from where I am on the grid.'

DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 10, (3rd Practice – 6, 1:27.048)

'I think tenth place must be my worst quali since I started with the team, so it wasn't the best day. I was frustrated mainly in sector 3. In Q1 and Q2 I felt it was my strongest sector, but then in the end we lost maybe half a second or more through there. And I don't really have an explanation for why that happened. I am disappointed with the outcome, as I had hoped to be at least P7 or P8. From the long run I did in FP3 this morning, the car performed consistently and the balance was okay, so we should be okay on tires tomorrow. We are not really quick enough down the straights, so we need a good start and then we will try and do something with strategy.'

CHRISTIAN HORNER

'A tricky qualifying for the team, and we can't help but feel we have underperformed, lining up eight and tenth on the grid after a difficult build up from Friday and FP3. I think Dany got the most out of the car today, and Daniel struggled a little on the last run. We have plenty of work to do in the race tomorrow.'

Quotes and news from the Spanish Grand Prix Friday Free Practice

DANIIL KVYAT

First Practice Session: Position: 7, Best Time: 1:28.785, Laps: 7

Second Practice Session: Position: 5, Best Time: 1:27.943, Laps: 25

'We had a good run in FP2, and there is a lot of data for the team to analyze to find improvements. We have some upgrades here, and we've been looking closely at how they work. We'll try to extract the maximum out of the car so we can make the most out of qualifying tomorrow.'

DANIEL RICCIARDO

First Practice Session: Position: 9, Best Time: 1:29.075, Laps: 9

Second Practice Session: Position: 13, Best Time: 1:29.098, Laps: 4

'We expected we would be limited with mileage today, and we also knew that we would have to use the fourth engine for FP2. It would've been nice to get some more laps in, but we did enough to give us plenty of data to look at. Dany had a cleaner session, and we'll also look at his data and try to learn a few things for tomorrow. There's a lot of potential with the upgrades, and tomorrow's qualifying is what counts.'

2015 SPANISH GP PREVIEW

Daniel Ricciardo

Q1: The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is Formula One's home away from home. What's it like racing at the track you know so well?

Ricciardo: Ah, well, I think most F1 drivers would say we've all done too many laps around here, but don't get me wrong – it's a great circuit.

Q2: Let's concentrate on the 'great circuit' bit. What's so good about it?

Ricciardo: It's fun to drive. The first two sectors have a really good flow to them, which is pretty cool. The last sector is a bit more about tire management on the modern layout but the rest is exhilarating.

Q3: Apart from the temperature, how different is the circuit on grand prix weekend compared to testing?

Ricciardo: Night and Day! We have a great atmosphere for the race. The circuit cuts into the hillside, so there's lots of good viewing areas. And so long as Alonso's on track, it's pretty crazy. That's great for all of us, not just Fernando. It's going to be good with three Spanish drivers in this year's race. There'll be a real buzz. The race itself: I think it's one where DRS is a big plus point. In the past, because everyone knew the track and their setup so well, races tended to be a bit stale. I think the DRS means that you don't get dull races anymore. You can still defend though – it's a good track for that – but in a way that's going to make the race exciting for spectators.

Q4: And how about the location? What's the highlight of the race weekend in Catalonia?

Ricciardo: Barcelona's really, really cool – lots of atmosphere, really good vibe. I'm also not entirely unaware of the fact it has some pretty good beaches and, as everyone is probably tired of hearing, I'm always happiest when we've got sand and water nearby. It's also a great city for food. Obviously I eat carefully, but I'm not one of those drivers who completely ignore the local cuisine. The restaurants in Barcelona are definitely a highlight, and I'm a big fan of eating out here.

Daniil Kvyat

Q1: The Circuit de Catalunya is a venue that holds few secrets for drivers, but after all the testing miles you put in there, does the track still hold any appeal?

Kvyat: Obviously the teams and drivers know the track very well simply through testing. We're there in pre-season, and all the drivers do a lot of miles there. However, just because we do a lot of testing there it doesn't mean the track is any less challenging for a driver. There's a reason it's used so much, and that's because it's got a great variety of corners and a lot of different challenges. For a driver it's a tough track – quite technical, but if you get everything right then it's really enjoyable.

Q2: The track is a little way outside of Barcelona, so do you get a chance to explore, or is it a case of circuit hotel, track and airport?

Kvyat: I know Barcelona well and really like being in Spain. I lived there for three months when I was racing in Formula Renault 2.0, as my team at the time was based there. Because I speak Italian it was easy for me to pick up some Spanish, and that makes the experience of being there a bit better. I have a lot of friends there and try to hang out a bit when I'm there.
