460-HP Gen 5 LT1 Crate Engine Concept Bows at SEMA

Company press release.

460-HP Gen 5 LT1 Crate Engine Concept Bows at SEMALAS VEGAS – Chevrolet Performance introduced a Gen 5 LT1 crate engine concept this week at the SEMA Show. Based on the compact Gen 5 Small Block engine that powers the 2014 Corvette Stingray – delivering 460 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque – it previews a new crate-engine package being evaluated for future release.

Like Chevrolet Performance's other crate engines, the LT1 package would enable builders to install a factory-assembled engine in their hot rod, resto-mod muscle car, classic truck and other vintage vehicles. It is being shown with a concept engine controller and wire harness, which would make the system a complete 'plug-and-play' package for easier, quicker installation by do-it-yourself builders.

Chevrolet Performance officials are gauging reaction to the concept engine system to help determine whether to offer it in the future.

'The Small Block V-8 has been a staple of the performance industry since it debuted in 1955,' said Jim Campbell, U.S. vice president, Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. 'Today, it remains the hot rod engine of choice for builders, whether they're using a classic Gen 1 '350' or a late model 'LS' engine. The new Gen 5 LT1 furthers that legacy with advanced technology and the highest output ever from a standard Corvette engine.'

Direct injection is all-new to the engine architecture and is a primary contributor to its greater combustion efficiency by ensuring a more complete burn of the fuel through precise control of the in the air-fuel mixture and fuel injection spray pattern.

Continuously variable valve timing, which GM pioneered for overhead-valve engines, is refined to support the LT1's cylinder deactivation and direct injection systems to make the most of performance, efficiency and emissions. It also helps the engine generate 50 lb-ft more low-rpm torque than the Corvette's previous 6.2L engine, matching the 7.0L LS7 engine from the 2013 Corvette Z06 from 1,000 to 4,000 rpm.

Additional Gen 5 LT1 engine features include:

◾New aluminum block casting with nodular iron main bearing caps

◾Advanced oiling system, with variable-displacement oil pump

In addition to the all-new Gen 5 LT1 concept, Chevrolet Performance is showing updated versions of longstanding Small Block packages, including the all-new ZZ5 350 and ZZ383 crate engines. They feature new Fast Burn cylinder head castings that incorporate LS-style beehive valve springs and complementing valvetrain components. The result is greater high-rpm range and durability – and power.

The ZZ5 is rated at 400 horsepower, more than any small block 350 offered in a production car. The ZZ383 is rated at 450 horsepower. Both engines complement high-rpm horses with low-rpm torque – at least 300 lb-ft by only 1,500 rpm – for that unmistakable feeling of immediate power exclusive to the Chevrolet small block. The new heads and valvetrain are also used on the small-block CT400 circle track racing engine.

More details about the ZZ5 and ZZ383 crate engines are available in the 2014 Chevrolet Performance Parts catalog, which can be downloaded free at chevrolet.com/performance. A locator on the site helps direct customers to their nearest dealer.
