2000 GMC Safari

2000 GMC Safari
Safari, GMC's mid-size solution to complex family-transport needs, combines a smooth ride, steadfast towing ability, and easy maneuverability for a better value and a safer, more secure means of handling the ever-expanding needs of average households.2000 GMC Safari
'Safari is an exceptionally versatile mid-size van appealing to a diverse breadth of customers,' observes commercial brand manager John Gaydash. 'Our policy of continuous improvement has been instrumental in keeping this product attractive to minivan buyers.'

2000 GMC Safari
Safari's versatility exceeds that of the front-drive minis on the market. The standard rear-drive and optional all-wheel-drive powertrains are ideal for ambitious camping, boat towing, and cross-country touring adventures.

With a standard three rows of seating in Safari's passenger edition, there's room for seven or eight passengers with a comfortable seat for everyone. Standard dutch doors in back--two vertically hinged lower doors, one horizontally hinged lift gate--offer the utmost in cargo- or grocery-loading convenience.

Powertrain Úpgrades
Safari's Vortec 4300 V6 is one of the most reliable and dependable powerplants on the market. It delivers 190 hp @ 4400 rpm and 250 lb-ft (339 Nm) of torque @ 2800 through a 4L60-E electronic four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

Standard features include sequential central port fuel injection, roller rocker arms, roller lifters, forged-steel connecting rods, a cast-aluminum oil pan, and extended-life platinum-tipped spark plugs. The long-life engine coolant is good for up to five years or 150,000 miles (241,350 km), whichever comes first, and Safari can run up to 100,000 miles (160,900 km) before the first tune-up is needed.

For 2001, the powertrain control module (PCM) is new and mounted on the intake manifold for the first time. Separating Safari's PCM from its vehicle control module facilitates more advanced electronic controls. Inside the 512-kilobyte PCM, one custom integrated circuit manages the fuel pump, exhaust-gas recirculation, and transmission operation while a second circuit handles ignition timing and spark-knock sensing. The new PCM saves both weight and wiring connections.

A new and more sophisticated detonation sensor mounted at the rear of the engine corrects ignition timing to eliminate any engine knock regardless of fuel grade used.
Other new engine-related improvements include more durable camshaft bearings, a lighter starter that draws less current from the battery to crank the engine, a more reliable coolant sensor, and a manifold pressure sensor that's less susceptible to electrical interference. Alternator ratings have been boosted to 105 amps for passenger models and 130 amps with RV equipment.

Safari now offers optional National Low Emissions Vehicle compliance for those fleets and government agencies seeking such a feature. A new on-road vapor recovery (ORVR) system stores fuel vapors during and after refueling in a 3.1-liter canister. The running engines consume these vapors later on. Safari's multi-layer composite fuel tank has a 27-gallon (102 ltr) capacity.

Tow/Haul Capability
A Tow/Haul mode added to the four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission last year activates a shift pattern especially geared for towing or heavy hauling. The transmission runs cooler and shift busyness on grades is avoided. Two-wheel-drive Safaris are capable of towing 5,900-pound (2,676.19 kg) trailers and four-wheel-drive models can handle trailers up to 5,600-pounds (2,540.12 kgs).

New Passenger Van Preferred Equipment Groups
Purchasing a Safari is simple thanks to repackaged equipment that drastically reduces the number of build combinations. Three different Preferred Equipment Groups now contain 34 distinct features as standard or optional equipment. (See Equipment Highlight pages that follow.) The number of passenger van trim levels have been consolidated from three to two--SLE and SLT.

Safety and Security Improvements
New seven-tumbler door and ignition locks make Safari more theft and vandal resistant. A hybrid-type inflator used for the passenger-side air bag operates more reliably at a lower temperature.

A remote keyless entry system is now standard passenger-van equipment. Door locks can be programmed by the consumer to automatically engage whenever road speed exceeds 15 mph (24 km/h).

Likewise, all doors can be programmed by the consumer to unlock when the key is removed from the ignition. If desired, the owner can select from four different lock-unlock operational modes by following instructions printed in the owner's manual. A built-in panic alarm activates the horn, parklamps, and headlamps for 30 seconds when a button is pressed on the keyless entry fob.

All Safari passenger vans have a high level of equipment aimed at enhanced passenger safety. Four-wheel anti-lock brakes are standard. Dual front airbags, three-point front seat belts, high back front bucket seats, side-guard door beams, and an energy-absorbing steering column help guard against collision injuries.

Other safety features include a center-mounted stop lamp, an interlock between the brake and transmission shifter, halogen headlamps, intermittent windshield wipers, and rear door child safety locks.

A PASSLock® II theft-deterrent system disables powertrain operation if any attempt is made to start the engine without the proper key. Automatic headlamps energizes the daytime running lamps any time the ignition key is in the on position, switching to regular head- and taillamps when low-light or nighttime conditions exist. A flash-to-pass feature signals the driver's intention to overtake a car in traffic.

Optional equipment aimed at maximum safety and security includes power windows, power door locks, dual electric rear view mirrors, and deep-tinted Solar Ray window glass. Child seat anchors keep an infant seat from moving forward in a sudden stop or collision.

New Color Palette
Pewter and Dark Toreador Red replace Silvermist and Copper on the exterior color chart.

Carryover Features
The well-equipped Safaris provide one of the longest lists of standard features available in any van-type product.

* Anti-lock brakes offer 200,000-mile (321,800 km)/12-year durability and reliability.
* Standard driver reminders include key-in-ignition, headlamps or park lamps on, and buckle seat belts.
* Head- and taillamps are automatically illuminated whenever the ignition switch is in the on position after dusk.
* Daytime running lights are standard.
* A panic button on the remote keyless entry fob triggers a horn and exterior lamp activation.
* If the key is left in the ignition, the driver's door automatically unlocks after the door-lock button is pressed. If an interior light is accidentally left on, it's automatically extinguished after 20 minutes to keep the battery from running down.
* A PASSLock II theft-deterrent system prevents the engine from running unless the correct key is used in the ignition switch.
