2005 GMC SAVANA ADDS YET MORE SAFETY TO ITS PROFESSIONAL-GRADE CHARACTER

Ask the average customer his or her impression of 'Professional Grade' and the responses you're most likely to get are: durable, reliable, strong and powerful. GMC Savana is all of that. That's why it's a popular choice for business customers looking for a full-size cargo carrier. Savana is also a very popular people-carrier – for families and transport companies. That's why regular-wheelbase 12-passenger Savana models will add the enhanced safety of StabiliTrak as an interim change during the 2005 model year. StabiliTrak was added as standard equipment on extended-wheelbase 12- and 15-passenger vans during the 2004 model year.

StabiliTrak helps drivers maintain vehicle control during certain difficult driving conditions, such as ice, snow, gravel, wet pavement and uneven road surfaces, as well as in emergency lane changes or avoidance maneuvers.

'By adding this system, we will take what we believe is already a very safe van and make it safer,' said Ray Chess, GM vehicle line executive, commercial trucks and vans. 'This enhancement underscores GM's leadership in bringing this important safety technology to more customers.'

StabiliTrak at work
StabiliTrak assists the vehicle in maintaining the driver's intended path by applying a brake force at any corner of the vehicle independent of the driver's use of the brake pedal.

StabiliTrak uses an accelerator pedal position sensor, a brake master cylinder pressure sensor and a steering wheel angle sensor as inputs to interpret the driver's desired path and whether to accelerate or decelerate the vehicle. StabiliTrak also uses these sensors plus a lateral accelerometer and yaw rate sensor to determine the vehicle's actual path.

If the difference between the driver's desired path and the vehicle's actual path becomes great enough, StabiliTrak takes appropriate action to assist the driver with maintaining the desired path. If the vehicle begins to 'snowplow,' or understeer, StabiliTrak applies the inside rear brake to help turn the vehicle. If the vehicle begins to fishtail, or oversteer, StabiliTrak applies the outside front brake to straighten the vehicle. StabiliTrak is integrated with the traction control and ABS systems.

GM began installing stability enhancement systems in passenger cars in 1997 and now has more than two million equipped vehicles on the road. In addition to being the first automaker to equip 15-passenger vans with the system, GM was the first to install stability enhancement systems in full-size sport utility vehicles.

'It's important to understand that no system is foolproof,' said Robert C. Lange, GM executive director, structure and safety integration. 'That is why we will continue to educate our customers on the unique operating characteristics of full-size, extended passenger vans and that they should be operated only by experienced drivers. We also support the advice of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that drivers and passengers in vans - and all other vehicles - always use safety belts. And we remind all vehicle occupants to obey state seat-belt use and child-passenger safety laws.

Still more safety


Savana also features driver- and front-passenger safety belts, three-point lap-and-shoulder belts in all first- and second-row seating positions and the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system for child seats in passenger vans.

OnStar-equipped Savana models feature new sixth-generation hardware with digital and analog coverage. OnStar's Gen 6 hardware also includes upgraded hands-free voice recognition capabilities including more intuitive continuous digit dialing and improved voice recognition accuracy. OnStar is the leading provider of in-vehicle safety, security and information services in the Únited States and Canada. Úsing the GPS satellite network and wireless technology, OnStar features core safety services and OnStar Personal Calling that allows drivers to make and receive hands-free, voice-activated phone calls using a powerful three-watt digital/analog system and external antenna for greater reception.

Savana powertrains


A lineup of Vortec 4800, 5300 and 6000 V-8 engines and the base Vortec 4300 V-6 provide Savana with best-in-class power and economy. The V-8s include recently redesigned induction systems and mass airflow sensors for quieter operation. Their specially designed air cleaner also can provide more than double the normal filter life for lower maintenance costs.

The Vortec 4800 4.8L V-8 is rated at 285 horsepower (213 kw) at 5600 rpm and 295 lb.-ft. (400 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm and is used for heavy-duty service applications, such as the 2500 Series regular- and extended-wheelbase cargo vans.

The Vortec 5300 5.3L V-8 produces 295 horsepower (220 kw) at 5200 rpm and delivers 330 lb.-ft. (447 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm. It comes standard in the AWD H1500 and 2500 Series models, and is optional in selected G1500 and 2500 regular/extended passenger/cargo vans.

The powerful Vortec 6000 6.0L V-8, producing 300 horsepower (224 kw) at 4400 rpm and 360 lb.-ft. (488 Nm) of torque at 4000 rpm, provides more than enough muscle for heavy-duty hauling. The 6000 comes standard in the G2500/3500 regular- and extended-wheelbase passenger vans and is mated to the Hydra-Matic 4L80-E transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com)

All Savana automatic transmissions incorporate GM's unique Tow/Haul mode, which reduces the frequency of shifting and improves predictability of shifts during towing.

Chassis and suspensions


Three-piece boxed frames provide 28 percent to 43 percent more torsional stiffness, depending on the model, and recently upgraded independent front suspensions offer flat handling and more isolation from road noise. Three all-wheel-drive 'H' models use a full-time AWD system to continuously transfer torque from slipping wheels to those with traction.

Standard rack-and-pinion power steering gives light-duty models a quicker, more responsive feel. The integral power recirculating-ball steering gear in heavy-duty models also has been upgraded for better durability. Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard on all vans.

An industry-first 60/40 left-hand-side hinged door provides the segment's most flexible loading capability. Available on regular-length passenger, conversion and cargo vans, it offers complete driver's-side access to the second-row seat/cargo compartment and third-row seat/rear compartment.
