2006 Carbontech Redback Spyder

The Australian based company Carbontech, headed by Nick Tomkinson, has been promoting their vehicle for the past few months to potential customers, but only recently made an official debut at the 2006 Melbourne Motorshow. With a curb weight of just 900 kg and a supercharged LS1 eight-cylinder engine producing 450 horsepower, this car is as potent as it is exotic. Carbon fiber and Kevlar used throughout the body are responsible for the vehicles low weight. A fully adjustable suspension makes the car slightly more practical for changing track conditions; it is not road legal. Power is sent to the rear wheels courtesy of a Getrag six-speed gearbox while stopping power is provided by slotted and ventilated disc brakes with four-piston calibers. Top speed is achieved at around 200 mph.

With any new evolving manufacturer, the road to success is a difficult one. The supercar market has typically favored the manufacturers that have a long and dated history, especially those that have been concreted in glory due to their racing pedigree. The Carbontech will have a difficult road ahead of them, but we are hopeful. The wonderful example of their abilities will be sold complete, read to be raced, and in compliance with Australian regulations.

Before serious production commences, Tomkinson hopes to have at least five orders. A North American customer has already purchased the first Redback Spyder for just under $200,000. It is expected to make appearances around Australia at the major events and shows in the near future.
