For the 2002 Formula One season, BAR racing team entered their 004 for competition. The driving line-up remained unchanged from prior years. Jacques Villeneuve, who had been with the team since its inception four years prior, was the teams number one driver. His teammate was Frenchman Oliver Panis, who was entering his second year with the team. The engine was a Honda RA002E powerplant which was more powerful than the one used in the 2001 and much lighter. It had a low center of gravity and a wider V angle. Honda committed to the BAR team by striking a three-year partnership which meant Honda would help with chassis development and provide resources for the BAR team and their F1 endeavors.

The 004 was a new car designed by Malcolm Oastler. With new financial backing, an upgraded engine, and a new car, the team had high hopes for the 2002 season. Other big changes for the team were Bridgestone's commitment and long-term partnership which provided tires and additional financial backing. Craig Pollock stepped down from the Managing Director and Team Principal position and was replaced by David Richards.

At the conclusion of the season, the Lucky Strike B.A.R. Honda finished with seven points and 8th in the Constructors Championship.
