In 1966 Graham Hill piloted a Lola chassis to a victory at the Indianapolis 500. The big news at that event was with Jackie Stewart and his four-wheel drive Lola. In 1978, Al Unser, Sr. used a modified Lola chassis to claim another victory for the Lola marque.

By the mid-1980s, Lola decided to contest the sport in a serious fashion. The CanAm series came to a halt in 1986; the year prior Lola had moved into CART and the Indianapolis 500. By 1991, a mere six years since their entrance into the sport, they had created such impressive and dominate machines, that no March teams were fielded. A few years later, Reynard entered the sport and within a few years, had nearly removed Lola from the sport. Lola was able to stay in business in the CART area and by 2005 were the only marque in the Champcar series. In 2006, Lola was displaced as Champcar switched to Panoz for chassis production.

The Lola Champcar entrant for 1999 was the B99/00. Power was from Cosworth, Mercedes, or Toyota engines, all having eight cylinders in 'V' configuration.
