2009 Edison2 Very Light Car

Edison2 pursues efficiency through the only two absolute virtues, which are low weight and low aerodynamic drag. The prototype model one display shows the highly efficient aerodynamic shape of the Very Light Car. The team has multiple entries in this competition, in both classes, that can seat either four or two passengers and will run on a combination of E85, Bio-Diesel, CNG or Hybrid-Electric powertrains.

Over the past several years, Edison2 has developed a method of producing low cost, environmentally friendly, and highly versatile fuel-efficient vehicles based around a modular design. This allows for the use of a proper drive train based upon application.

A sustainable car must be measured by more than just fuel economy; all energy and environmental costs should be considered. Materials vary greatly in environmental impacts - carbon fiber is energy-intensive to produce and difficult to recycle, while batteries are laden with hazardous and heavy metals.

Our approach to solving the United States' energy dependence comes from looking at the big picture and not being distracted by the politically fashionable trends. A very light and aerodynamic car is more efficient than a heavier one with more drag, no matter what type of power source is used. Depending upon application, different types of power plants and drive trains have various costs and benefits. Through modular design, the Very Light Car is the platform of the future, eventually allowing for a choice of propulsion that fits the customer's needs, preferences, and driving habits.
