The Datsun 1000 was introduced in 1966 (also known as the Nissan Sunny, the Nissan Tsuru, and the Nissan N14 Pulsar). The Datsun 1000 was available in both a Standard and Deluxe version. The second-generation of the Sunny was introduced in 1970, and known as the Datsun 1200. It was a slightly larger vehicle that was given MacPherson struts in the front and disc brakes as optional equipment. A short time later, a GX Grand Luxury version fitted with a twin-carburetor engine was introduced.

Production of the Datsun 1200 would continue from 1970 through 1976. Power was from a 1.2 liter engine with a variety of engine options, including a three-speed manual and automatic, and a four- and five-speed manual.

This small, compact vehicle was very fuel-efficient, earning a government rating of nearly 29 mpg. On the highway, it was capable of nearly 38 mpg.
