1963 Harcraft Mickey Thompson Indy Special

Monoposto

This car was originally built for Mickey Thompson's first effort to compete in the Indianapolis 500 in 1962. With a Buick V8 fitted, it qualified and was driven by Dan Gurney in his first appearance at Indy, finishing in 20th place. Although Gurney was just a rookie, he achieved the seventh-fastest qualifying time, at 147.886 mph. In 1963 Thompson returned to Indy with the car, this time fitted with a Chevrolet V8, but after several attempts were made by driver Bill Cheesbourg, it failed to make the grid. Thompson trailered the car back to California and it languished in a corner of his shop for decades. The current owner acquired the car in 2014. A time capsule of Indy racing from a half-century back, the car has all its original paint, decals, and lettering, as well as its original Firestone tires mounted on the original Halibrand wheels.
