Boattail Speedster

This Dryer Sprint Car was built in the Jackson State Prison in Jackson, Michigan, as a program for prison inmates. Lyle May, an inmate, received approval from the warden and headed up the project. The frame and body were supplied by Pop Dreyer of Indianapolis and patterns to cast and machine the SOHC head in the prison were supplied by Slim Rutherford. The engine displacement of 213 cubic inches produced 200 horsepower from the four cylinders. Lyle May took the Sprint Car with him at the time of his release and opened the Owosso Speedway in Owosso, MI. The Dryer Sprint Car was always announced at any track it raced across the Midwest as 'The Prison Car'.
