Overview

The Lincoln Navigator is the premium full-size sport utility vehicle that created the class. Improvements for 2005 assure that it will continue to provide the kind of leadership that has earned it high owner loyalty.

New for 2005, it includes the 300-horsepower, 5.4-liter, 3-valve engine.

The 2005 Navigator is the only domestic full-size SUV equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. This premium transmission provides increased refinement and better fuel economy than the previous four-speed automatic.

An extensive list of luxury and convenience features provide a comfortable experience for Navigator's occupants. These features include: available heated-and-cooled front seats, power deploying running boards, power-folding seats in the third row and a power liftgate.

The refined exterior and interior mix design cues from Lincoln's rich heritage with modern finishes and white light-emitting-diode technology.

The optional Lincoln Soundmark THX-Certified audio system offers DVD-based navigation with voice activation, a touch-screen system interface and an in-dash six-disc CD changer.

Navigator is built in Wayne, Mich.

Design and Equipment

Navigator's new design for 2005 features an all-new front fascia with a molded-in lower grille and redesigned fog lamps. The upper portion of the grille has a new chrome finish.

The side profile benefits from updates to the cladding and a new design for the standard fixed-running boards.

Navigator continues to offer first-in-the-industry power deployable running boards that quietly deploy a full four inches from the rocker panel when a door is opened, then retract automatically when the door is closed. A power liftgate that can raise or lower the door in about 10 seconds is also available.

The interior mixes American burl walnut, premium leather trim, satin nickel finishes and white light-emitting-diode lighting to create a luxurious and contemporary cabin.

Switches for the optional heated-and-cooled front seats are relocated from the console to the instrument panel as part of the automatic climate control system.

Powertrain

Navigator delivers more than ever, with a new 300-horsepower, 5.4-liter, 3-valve V-8 engine with 365 pound-feet of torque, mated to a new premium six-speed ZF automatic transmission coupled with either two- or four-wheel drive. The new powertrain combination offers improved refinement and economy through a wider gear ratio span and a more modern engine architecture.

The engine features variable-valve timing and computer-controlled charge motion control valves for torque across the rev range and maximum horsepower with premium gas. Sound-damping actions, customized for the Navigator with the aid of computer analysis, help to make this refined engine even quieter in operation. Emissions also are improved.

The new premium six-speed automatic transmission provides a significant why-buy feature, offering new levels of refinement in this class. The transmission is designed for quiet operation and exceptionally smooth shifts. Its wider overall ratio span allows for more economical highway cruising.

The transmission is also currently used on Jaguar's flagship XJ sedan - providing an example of the synergies between Ford Motor Company brands.

With the optional heavy duty towing package, Navigator can tow up to 8,600 pounds when properly equipped. The towing experience is improved due to the transmission's lower first gear ratio.

Safety

The 2005 Lincoln Navigator builds on a legacy of industry-leading safety.

For 2005, AdvanceTrac® with Roll Stability ControlTM is standard on all Navigators. The system adds a new industry-leading technology that can reduce the risk of untripped vehicle rollovers. The system also gives drivers an interactive vehicle dynamics aid that can help correct oversteer and understeer skids.

The 2004 Lincoln Navigator was the only vehicle in its class to receive the government's highest five-star crash test rating four years in a row.

Navigator's well-balanced chassis, precise steering and powerful brakes provide the first measure of defense in emergencies: controllability. If a collision is unavoidable, a robust frame and a comprehensive portfolio of safety features help protect the driver and passengers.

Additional safety features include Safety CanopyTM system, dual front air bags and a standard tire-pressure monitoring system that has been updated for 2005.
