1977 Chevrolet Camaro

The 1977 Chevrolet Camaro was a 2-door coupe with a base price of $4,115 and equipped with either a six- or eight-cylinder engine. In the front were disc brakes, with finned drums at the rear. It had a variable-ratio power steering, wraparound taillights with bright moldings, a coil spring front suspension, a leaf spring rear suspension, dual-speed windshield wipers, and a wheelbase that measured 108 inches. The six-cylinder engine was shared with several other models within the Chevy lineup, including the Malibu and Malibu Classic, Nova, and Impala. It was an inline, overhead-valve, 250 CID unit that had seven main bearings, an 8.25:1 compression ratio, and delivered 110 horsepower at 3,800 RPM. The base eight-cylinder engine was an overhead-valve, 305 CID (5.0-liter) unit that had 145 horsepower and 245 lbs-ft of torque. A larger 350 CID (5.7-liter) unit was available, bringing horsepower to 170 hp and 270 lbs-ft of torque.

The 1977 Camaro was well equipped with a soft-rim vinyl-covered four-spoke sport steering wheel, contoured full-foam front bucket seats, bucket-style full-foam rear seats, and all-vinyl seat trim. Safety features included the energy-absorbing steering column, passenger-guard door locks, a padded instrument panel, thick laminate windshield, safety armrests, reflectors, four-way hazard warning flashers, signal lights with a lane-change feature, backup lights, a starter safety switch, a dual-action safety hood latch, and energy-absorbing front seatback tops.

Chevrolet produced 131,717 examples of the base Camaro.

Above the base trim level Camaro was the Rally Sport Package that sold for an additional $271. It came with appearance changes, unique paint color schemes, bright-edged headlight bezels, Rally wheels, and Rally Sport decals. The Camaro Type LT Series had dual sport mirrors with the left-hand side being remote-controlled, dual horns, Rally wheels with bright center caps and trim rings, a 'Type LT' nameplate located behind the side window, another 'Type LT' nameplate on the rear trim panel, bright radiator grille outline moldings, and a black-finished accent panel under a bright lower body molding. The interior received special instrumentation that included a tachometer, voltmeter, electric clock, and temperature gauge. It also included the Quiet Sound group which added simulated leather trim on the instrument cluster, additional body sound insulation, a one-piece hood insulator, and additional instrument lighting. There were special Type LT front bucket seats with deep-contoured backs and color-coordinated interior trim.

17,026 Camaro's received the Rally Sport Package in 1977 and 72,787 had the Type LT Package. Total 1977 Camaro production was 218,853 units.
