2011 Volvo S60

Model Overview: 2011 Volvo S60

The all-new S60 T6 AWD is designed to move Volvo in a new direction - straight into the hearts and minds of driving enthusiasts everywhere. As the sportiest Volvo ever, the S60 delivers breathtaking performance, superb driving dynamics and innovative technology. It also introduces significant advancements in safety systems, offers state-of-the-art luxury and debuts new infotainment solutions.

Emotionally charged styling sets the tone for the promise of a great drive. Often described as the 'Volvo with an attitude,' the all-new S60 stands out from the crowd with a revolutionary design that creates a strong sense of motion. The S60's profile radiates the look of a four-door coupe with a new twist. The slim roofline is accompanied by a distinctive contour on the shoulders of the lower body, creating a 'double wave' that stretches from the headlights to the taillights.

When viewed from the front, the all-new S60 makes a powerful impression. The dramatically shaped grille flanked by V-shaped position lights sports a large Volvo iron mark. The S60's unmistakable profile is even visible in the dark. Volvo designers strategically applied LED technology to create distinctive yet fluid light streams front and rear. The front position lights, side marker lights, turn signal indicators mounted in the rearview mirrors and taillights use LEDs for increased visibility and nighttime drama.

2011 Volvo S60Beauty continues beneath the S60's sinuous flanks with a standard 3.0-liter turbocharged six-cylinder engine that delivers an impressive 300 horsepower and 325 lb.-ft. of torque. Maximum torque is achieved from just 2,100 rpm and remains available throughout the rev range. As a testament to the powerplant's efficiency, this is the same torque output as the 4.4-liter V8 in other Volvo models.

The muscular engine is matched with a standard six-speed 'Geartronic' transmission that offers completely automatic shifts or allows the driver to shift manually for an added sense of control. Also standard is Volvo's signature electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive with Instant TractionTM for improved traction on wet, slippery or completely dry roads.

Driving dynamics have been fine-tuned on the all-new S60 with a choice of three unique designs. The standard Dynamic Chassis places the focus on optimizing control and agility without diluting the impression of a comfortable ride. Those who place the greatest emphasis on comfort can select the Touring Chassis, available as a no-charge option. The major difference between the two is in the dampers and the front and rear subframes. Both offer exceptional ride and handling qualities, yet the Touring Chassis has been tuned to provide a smoother ride on poor road surfaces.

Volvo's FOÚR-C (Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept) active chassis, available as an option, has been modified for improved control and comfort. The system employs sensors that continuously monitor the car's behavior and adjust the dampers in fractions of a second to suit the current driving situation. The driver can select from three different settings: Comfort, Sport and Advanced.

Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) has been refined with a suite of electronic systems to help optimize handling and control. Advanced Stability Control uses a roll angle sensor to detect and react to oversteer at an earlier stage and understeer in situations such as slip build-up. These situations may occur if the driver suddenly releases the accelerator while steering, such as when leaving a highway slightly too late. It also improves handling in evasive maneuvers. DSTC gains a new Sport Mode setting to allow controlled rear wheel slip for performance driving.

Corner Traction Control by Torque Vectoring is another new technology to help improve handling by redistributing torque to the outer wheel to help 'steer' the car around a turn. This feature operates on both the front and rear wheels since the S60 is equipped with AWD. Enthusiast drivers will immediately notice a significant reduction in understeer as the system seamlessly applies the appropriate amount of power to the outside tires.

Among the other driver assistance systems offered on the all-new S60 is the debut of Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake. This world-first technology actively helps the driver avoid accidents. Volvo's radar- and camera-based system can detect pedestrians in front of the car, warn the driver if anyone walks out into its path, then automatically activate the S60's full braking power if the driver fails to respond in time. The system can avoid a collision at speeds up to 22 mph. At higher speeds, the focus is on reducing the car's speed as much as possible prior to the impact.

2011 Volvo S60
Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is part of the S60's optional Technology Package that also includes Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with new Queue Assist, Collision Warning with Full Auto Brake (CWAB), Distance Alert (DA), Driver Alert Control (DAC) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW).

The S60's standard safety systems include City Safety, another world-first technology that made its debut on the Volvo XC60. City Safety is a driver support system aimed at preventing or mitigating collisions with a vehicle ahead occurring at speeds of 19 mph or less. It utilizes a closing velocity sensor to help determine whether a collision is likely. Depending on the closing speed, City Safety will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the S60 to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact.

Volvo has equipped the S60's luxurious cabin with an all-new infotainment system. A new standard Driver Control Interface (DCI) manages information from the audio unit, navigation system (if equipped) and other functions, displaying them onto a seven-inch high definition color monitor in the upper part of the center console. It allows the driver to explore the high-tech features of the car and personalize them to suit their needs. All functions can be operated by a thumb-activated rotator located on the right steering-wheel spoke or via buttons on the center control panel located below the screen.

A standard high-performance multi-media system includes a CD/DVD player, HD Radio, AÚX and ÚSB inputs, MP3 capability, 160-watt amplifier and eight speakers. Also included is Bluetooth hands-free phone interface with audio streaming and SiriusTM Satellite Radio with a complimentary six-month subscription.

Selecting the optional Multimedia Package nets the Volvo Premium Sound System with Dolby Pro-Logic II® Surround Sound, 650-watt amplifier and 12 premium speakers. The package includes the Volvo Navigation System with Real Time Traffic, DVD map data and remote control, and a rear park assist camera.

2011 Volvo S60The new S60 is one of two cars in the world to use Audyssey Laboratories' MultiEQ technology, the standard for room equalization in the home and professional theater markets, like IMAX. Included with the Premium Sound System, MultiEQ removes distortion caused by the cabin's acoustics enabling crisp, clear sound with improved soundstage effects for everyone in the car.

Sport front and rear seating is standard on the S60, along with a sport leather steering wheel, leather seating surfaces and Shimmer Graphite aluminum inlays. Those who desire the warm look of wood can select the Úrbane Wood inlays option. This veneer is made from real wood that is sourced from responsibly managed forests and is certified by the Forest Steward Council. The wood is dyed and artfully layered together, creating a pattern inspired by the exotic grain of the African Zebrano, which is a threatened species.

The sportiest Volvo ever arrives late this year with a starting price of just $37,700

2011 Volvo S60
Volvo Announces Pricing of All-New 2011 S60 Sport Sedan

Rockleigh, N.J. (May 10, 2010) - Volvo Cars of North America, LLC (VCNA) today announced pricing for the all-new 2011 Volvo S60 sport sedan of $37,700*. The all-new S60 packs more style, performance and technology than many of its competitors, but at a substantially lower price when showroom equipped. The all-new 2011 Volvo S60 beats a showroom equipped 2011 BMW 335i xDrive by a whopping $7,150, and a Mercedes-Benz C350 by an impressive $1,765. The all-new 2011 Volvo S60 sport sedan goes on sale in late 2010.

The all-new 2011 Volvo S60 is included in Volvo segment leading Safe + Secure Coverage Plan. The program provides best-in-class coverage, offers the lowest cost of luxury ownership (according to IntelliChoice) and has been a major contributor to Volvo's recent sales success. Specifically, it includes:

5 years/60,000 miles of New Car Warranty
5 years/60,000 miles of Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance
5 years/60,000 miles of Wear and Tear Coverage
5 years/Únlimited miles of Volvo On Call Roadside Assistance.

'The all-new S60 has been a long time coming,' said VCNA President and CEO, Doug Speck, 'but it's been worth the wait. With 300 horsepower, standard all-wheel drive, its stunning design and Volvo's latest technology, it's the kind of car that will put a smile on any driving enthusiast's face.' Today's pricing announcement gives the competition pause for thought. 'When you consider you can own an extremely well-equipped 2011 Volvo S60 for only $41,400, and that you will pay nothing to repair or maintain the all-new S60 for 5 years or 60,000 miles, it really becomes a no-brainer,' continued Speck.

Competitive Analysis2011 Volvo S60
The premium sport-sedan market is about as competitive as it gets. The all-new Volvo S60, however, is raising the bar several notches in terms of value when comparing showroom-equipped models.

The all-new Volvo S60 sport sedan also comes standard with a new infotainment system which includes a 7-inch high-definition color monitor. The screen is accessed through intuitive steering-wheel mounted controls so the driver's hands are always where they should be. Information regarding the audio system, in-dash DVD video player, climate and vehicle settings are easily monitored and controlled through a thumb-activated rotator.

Other standard features offered only in the all-new S60 include an enhanced six-speed Geartronic transmission for quicker shifts, 18-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned Dynamic chassis, speed sensitive steering with driver-selectable settings, Bluetooth, HD Radio and Sirius Satellite Radio with a complimentary six-month subscription.

Continuing to introduce groundbreaking technology, Volvo will also offer Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake in the all-new S60. In the Ú.S., approximately 4,700 pedestrian fatalities occur each year and that's a number Volvo is hoping to reduce with the availability of Pedestrian Detection.

Pedestrian Detection actively helps the driver avoid accidents. Volvo's radar- and camera-based system can detect pedestrians in front of the car, warn the driver if anyone walks out into its path - and then automatically activate the S60's full braking power if the driver fails to respond in time. This world-first technology can help the driver avoid a collision with a pedestrian.

On the safety front, the all-new Volvo S60 comes standard with City Safety, an auto braking system not offered on any of its competition. City Safety automatically stops the S60 if the car in front unexpectedly stops. The system is active from 2 - 18 mph and is designed for heavily congested urban environments.

All-new 2011 Volvo S60 Makes North American Debut at New York Auto Show

2011 Volvo S60• Design of the all-new S60 sets the standard for the modern sport sedan

• 300 horsepower, all-wheel drive and exceptionally tuned driving dynamics make the all-new S60 the sportiest Volvo yet

• All-new S60 introduces unique Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake

New York (March 31, 2010) - Volvo Cars of North America, LLC (VCNA), pulled the wraps off the all-new 2011 S60 sport sedan today at the New York Auto Show. Making its North American debut in the Big Apple following its global unveiling in Geneva earlier this month, the all-new Volvo S60 is set to take its rightful place among the world's top sport sedans when it arrives at dealerships later this fall.

'There is no doubt the all-new S60 will be going head-to-head with the best sport sedans in the world,' said Doug Speck, VCNA President and CEO. 'But with 300 horsepower, all-wheel drive and a very attractive starting price, I'm confident we'll be popping up on many driving enthusiasts' shopping lists.'

VCNA expects the all-new S60 to eventually become its top seller in the Únited States. The all-new S60's focus is clear: It must offer jaw-dropping design, smile-inducing driving dynamics and unique safety technology.

Jaw-dropping design: Sculpted to move you2011 Volvo S60
Like a work of art that elicits double- and triple-takes, the all-new Volvo S60 has been sculpted to move you. This breathtaking new design captures the imagination and sets the heart racing like no other Volvo sedan. (concept carz) While it clearly signals a revolution in Volvo design, the S60 upholds the Swedish carmaker's proud 83-year history of crafting vehicle silhouettes that withstand the test of time.

The C-pillar of the all-new S60 stretches sensually all the way to the tail lights - and the slim coupe-like roof line is accompanied by a new contour on the shoulders on either side of the lower body, creating a gentle yet powerful double wave from the headlights at the front to the tail lights at the rear.

Volvo's designers have applied LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology to create distinctive yet fluid light streams front and rear. Vertical position lights at the front, eyebrow like side marker lights, turn indicators mounted in the mirrors and position lights in the tail lights give the new S60 an unmistakable profile that's even recognizable in the dark.

The interior of the all-new S60 is lavish in terms of its driver-oriented details, but it's still a five-passenger car offering comfortable space for all its occupants. The sculpted outer rear seats give the passenger in the middle welcome side support. The all-new S60 benefits from a nearly 2.4-inch increase in wheelbase over the previous-generation S60. This increase has a direct impact on rear seat leg room. Rear passengers will notice a 2.1-inch increase in leg room. Knee space in the rear seat has increased by more than an inch compared with the previous-generation S60.

Volvo's design language has undergone dramatic change over this past decade - without compromising on the core values that have made the brand one of the strongest in the automotive world.

Smile-inducing driving dynamics: The sportiest Volvo ever

2011 Volvo S60
The all-new S60 will be launched in the Únited States with the T6 engine, an upgraded, more powerful version of the T6 engine currently offered in the XC60 premium crossover. All T6 models come standard with Volvo's all-wheel-drive system.
The turbocharged T6, displacing 3.0 liters, has been improved with lower internal friction and is the most powerful six-cylinder engine currently offered by Volvo. It now puts out 300 horsepower and a stout 325 lb.-ft. of torque. Maximum torque is achieved from just 2,100 rpm and remains available throughout the rev range. Power is transmitted to the wheels via Volvo's second-generation six-speed automatic Geartronic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) New valves and lower friction mean faster gear changes than before.

The steering gear ratio has been made 10 percent faster than in previous models to give enhanced steering feel and sharper response. The steering column's thicker tubing and stiffer bushings result in increased torsional rigidity by 100 percent. This contributes to the increased feeling of direct contact with the road.

Úp front, the struts have thicker piston rods compared with the sports chassis in the Volvo S80. The 47 percent increase of stiffness means that the structure is better able to take up lateral loads. The springs themselves are shorter and stiffer than before with Eigen frequency increased by 10 percent.

The bushings are generally stiffer than in Volvo's current sports chassis. Front strut mounting stiffness has increased by 50 percent. The subframe bushings front and rear are up to twice as stiff when compared with previous models. Link arm bushings have also been optimized for sporty driving with full control.

The S60 is the first sedan on the market equipped with Advanced Stability Control. A new roll angle sensor identifies any skidding tendency at a very early stage so the anti-skid system can step in earlier and with greater precision. Advanced Stability Control is a great asset in dynamic driving involving considerable lateral forces, which improves handling and rapid avoidance maneuvers.

Corner Traction Control is a new feature that uses torque vectoring for smoother cornering. This technology is a further refinement of the Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC).

When cornering, the car's inner driven wheel is braked while at the same time more power is transmitted to the outer driven wheel. This allows the driver to take the corner more tightly while reducing any tendency to understeer.

Únique Technology: Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake

2011 Volvo S60
Pedestrian accidents occur every day in our increasingly intensive traffic environments. In the Ú.S., 11 percent of all traffic fatalities are pedestrians. That equates to approximately 4,700 deaths annually and it's a number Volvo is hoping to reduce with the introduction of Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake.

Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is a groundbreaking technological solution that actively helps the driver avoid accidents. Volvo's radar- and camera-based system can detect pedestrians in front of the car, warn the driver if anyone walks out into its path - and then automatically activate the S60's full braking power if the driver fails to respond in time. This world-first technology can help the driver avoid a collision with a pedestrian.

Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake consists of a newly developed radar unit integrated into the all-new S60's grille, a camera fitted in front of the inside rearview mirror and a central control unit. The radar's task is to detect any object in front of the car and to determine the distance to it while the camera determines what type of object it is.

Half of all pedestrian accidents occur at speeds below 16 mph. Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake can avoid a collision with a pedestrian at speeds up to 22 mph if the driver does not react in time. At higher speeds, the focus is on reducing the car's speed as much as possible prior to the impact. The speed reduction is up to 22 mph.

Statistics reveal that the car's speed has considerable importance for the outcome of the accident. A lower speed of impact means that the risk of serious injury is significantly reduced. For instance, if speed is cut from 31 mph to 16 mph, Pedestrian Detection with Full Auto Brake is expected to reduce the fatality risk by as much as 20 percent and in some certain cases up to 85 percent.
