1974 Chevrolet Caprice Classic

The origins of the Caprice name have several stories attached. Some believed it was coined by Chevrolet Sales Manager Bob Lund after a classy restaurant he frequently visited in New York City. Other say it was named after Caprice Chapman, daughter of auto executive and influential Indy-car official James P. Chapman.

The Caprice was produced during the 1965 through 1996 model years. It represented Chevrolet's full-sized passenger cars and competed with the Ford LTD, Plymouth VIP, and AMC's Ambassador DPL. They were luxurious and well appointed, with thicker carpeting and sound insulation, more upscale exterior trims, and courtesy lighting.

By 1974, the Caprice Classic was in its second generation. It was given several styling updates for 1974 including a modern, swept-back appearance, new fenders, grille, and hood. Body styles included a sedan, hardtop sedan, Custom Coupe, convertible, and a 6- and 9-passenger station wagon. Power was supplied by an overhead-valve V8 engine displacing 400 cubic-inches and offering 180 horsepower.
