1964 Chevrolet Chevelle Series

The 1960s ushered in a new era of design that moved away from the tall tailfins, excessive chrome, wood, and soft suspension. Instead, it began to move towards horsepower, torque, and handling. Launched in 1964, Chevy's intermediate Chevelle rested between the compact Chevy II and Corvair lines and the full-size Chevrolets. It was given attractive styling and came with an extensive list of options. It was based upon a perimeter frame with a 115-inch wheelbase length and full coil-spring underpinnings shared with its A-Body stablemates from Buick, Olds, and Pontiac. Nearly every available powerplant was available on the Chevelle, from the thrifty inline sixes to small-block V-8s and, eventually, the Mark IV big-block engine starting with the limited-production Z-16 option of 1965. In total, no fewer than 14 powertrain combinations were available for the Chevelle during its introductory year.

The Chevelle quickly earned a reputation on the street and strip alike with help from such individuals as Dick Harrell, Malcolm Durham and others.

The base Chevelle Series for 1964 was the Chevelle 300. It had thin bright metal body-side moldings, '300' designation, and the Chevrolet name spelled out in chrome letters on the rear deck lid and on the edge of the hood. Standard interior equipment included a rearview mirror, an enclosed steering column, and a lighted instrument cluster fitted with a dial speedometer, oil pressure indicator light, engine temperature indicator light, and a generator indicator light. There was an ash tray, a locking glove box, direction signal indicators, and a five-position ignition switch. The seats were available in four colors including Aqua, Red, Fawn or Blue. There were vinyl-coated rubber floor mats, padded armrests in the front and rear, and dual rear ashtrays.

Exterior features included push-button outside door handles, metal inner front fender liners, and an all-welded steel frame with welded torque-box design.

Body styles available on the 300 Series included a 2- and 4-door sedan, and a 2- and 4-door station wagon. The base six-cylinder engine was an overhead-valve unit with a 194.4 cubic-inch displacement size and offered 120 horsepower. The Base V8 engine was a 283 CID unit that had nearly 200 horsepower.

For buyers seeking more than the Chevelle 300 offered, Chevrolet offered the Chevelle Malibu. It came with metal body side moldings, bright metal Malibu script, and bright metal moldings on the rocker panels. Inside was a deluxe steering wheel with a horn ring, a lighted glove compartment, an electric clock, and backup lights. Body styles included a 4-door sedan, 2-door sport coupe, a 6- and 9-passenger station wagon, and a convertible. Six and eight-cylinder engines were available.

The Convertible and station wagons were upholstered with an all-vinyl interior and deep-twist carpeting. The Sport Coupe and Sedans were upholstered in deluxe pattern cloth with leather-look vinyl trimmings. Interior color choices included Red, Aqua, Fawn, Saddle, and Blue.

The Chevelle Malibu SS 'Super Sport' were limited to either the Sport Coupe or Convertible. The SS was distinguished by 'SS' chrome circle badges located on both sides of the rear fender and on the right-hand side of the rear body panel. Unlike the other Malibu trim levels, the SS did not have bright metal mid-body side moldings. Instead, they had bright metal from the fender tops to the wheel lips and rocker panels.

Standard equipment on the Malibu SS included a deluxe steering wheel with a horn ring, backup lights, black sidewall tires, vinyl upholstery, front seat belts, heater and defroster, foam front seat cushions, electric windshield wipers, an electric clock, carpeting, a glove compartment light, and a center console with a floor-mounted straight-line shift lever for the Powerglide automatic transmission or a stick shift for the four-speed synchromesh gearbox. They also came with front bucket seats upholstered in vinyl with bright metal moldings.
