Williams Formula One car for the 2001 season was the FW23. It was driven by Ralf Schumacher who was in his third year with them, and Juan Pablo Montoya, a Formula 3000 and CART champion who was making his F1 debut. The engine powering the FW23 was a BMW 3-liter V10 that was naturally aspirated and mated to a Williams 7-speed semi-automatic sequential gearbox. The car rode on Michelin tires and had a carbon-fiber monocoque structure. The BMW engines were fast, but they were not as reliable as their rivals, resulting in a finishing rate of less than 50-percent. The team finished in an impressive third place in the Constructors' Championship with 80 points.
