2009 Brawn BGP 001

The Brawn BGP 001 was the first - and only - F1 car used by the Brawn GP team. The car debuted at Silverstone in the United Kingdom on March 6th of 2009. Team drivers included Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello. It was designed between 2008 and 2009 by Honda and then Brawn after the change-over. The design was by Loic Bigois, in a similar guise to many other modern F1 cars. It had a molded carbon fiber and honeycomb composite monocoque and a suspension setup comprised of wishbones and pushrod-activated torsion springs and rockers.

The car was involved in the diffuser appeal which was rejected by the FIA deeming the car's diffuser legal. Powering the car was a Mercedes-Benz 2.4-liter V8 engine mated to a 7-speed semi-automatic gearbox.

In late 2008, Honda withdrew from Formula 1 and put their F1 operation up for sale. Though interest in the company was strong, a buyer could not be found. This led to a management buy-out by team principle Ross Brawn. The new team was given the name 'Brawn GP.'

As the season began, it was clear that Honda's withdrawal was a mistake. They had begun work on a new car during the 2008 season, and many predicted that the team would have a great 2009 season. The new car, painted in white with Day-Glo yellow stripe livery, proved to be very fast and capable. Button and Barrichello drove their cars to a one-two victory during the season-opening Australian Grand Prix. Ferrari and McLaren, the prior year's top contenders, failed to score points. During the first seven races, Button scored six wins. By this point, most other teams had caught up and were mounting a comeback. One of the biggest challenges came from the Red Bull RB5.

The Brawn team would hold onto their lead, mostly because each of the last few races had different winners. The Brawn GP F1 team would finish the season in first place in the World Constructors Championship after earning 172 points. Jenson Button would win the Drivers' Championship.
