2012 BMW X1

The BMW X1 – unique in the premium segment and now even more efficient.

The BMW X1, the very first and still the only premium vehicle in its segment, continues to extend its pioneering position in the field of fuel efficiency. In the autumn of 2011, the model diversity across the range of the compact all-rounder will be complemented by the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition. This model, which was systematically designed to provide driving pleasure simultaneously combined with reduced fuel consumption and emission levels, is powered by a 120 kW/163 hp four-cylinder diesel engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. With an average fuel consumption of 4.5 litres/100 km and a CO2 emission level of 119 grams per kilometre it achieves best marks for efficiency in a BMW X model. Furthermore, from the autumn of 2011, a newly developed four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology will be available for the BMW X1. The 135 kW/184 hp power unit also sets new standards in the reduction of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions within its performance class, with values ranging from 7.1 litres and 165 grams for the BMW X1 sDrive20i and 7.7 litres (automatic: 7.6 litres) and 179 grams (177 grams) for the BMW X1 xDrive20i.

The consistent deployment of highly efficient engines and BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard helps BMW X models also achieve brand-typical driving pleasure combined with exemplary fuel economy and low emission levels. The BMW X1's outstanding efficiency is a fundamental part of its premium character, which is unique within the competitive environment and also underscored by high-class workmanship, elaborated functionality, a variable interior and numerous equipment features. The BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition raises the relation between sporty and athletic agility and fuel economy to a new level. Its 2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, whose BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises a supercharging system with variable turbine geometry and Common Rail injection, generates a maximum output of 120 kW/163 hp between 3 250 und 4 200 rpm. Maximum torque of 380 Nm is available between 1 750 and 2 500 rpm.

The engine has been optimised in detail in order to achieve an exceptionally high degree of efficiency. Special model-specific features include a centrifugal force pendulum in the dual-mass flywheel, which compensates vibration experienced at low engine speeds, thus providing more riding comfort when the vehicle is driven within the economic low engine speed range. The gear-shift point indicator fitted as standard has been adapted to suit the new engine characteristics. Moreover, standard features also include brake energy regeneration, Auto Start Stop function, electromechanical power steering, a disengageable air-conditioning compressor and tyres with reduced rolling resistance. The BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition also features a longer rear axle drive ratio and specific light alloys in the Streamline design.

2012 BMW X1Furthermore, the BMW X1 sDrive20d EfficientDynamics Edition features newly conceived insulation technology for reducing engine noise that is perceptible inside the vehicle. The noise optimisation measures will be deployed as from the autumn of 2011 in all further diesel versions of the BMW X1.

The petrol engine variants of the BMW X1 also present themselves as pacesetters for ever-increasing driving pleasure combined with optimised efficiency. The BMW X1 xDrive28i is now being followed by further models featuring a new generation of four-cylinder combustion engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The technology package featured on the 2-litre four-cylinder power unit for the BMW X1 sDrive20i with rear-wheel drive and the BMW X1 xDrive20i with intelligent four-wheel drive comprises a supercharging system according to the Twin Scroll principle, the direct injection system High Precision Injection and variable valve control VALVETRONIC. This combination guarantees not only spontaneous response and sporty power delivery even in the higher load ranges, but also favourable fuel consumption that is outstanding for petrol engines in this performance class.

Maximum power output of the new engine is 135 kW/184 hp, which is made available between 5 000 and 6 250 rpm, whilst maximum torque of 270 Nm is achieved between 1 250 and 4 500 rpm. Thanks to its supreme pulling power and sporting performance, the BMW X1 sDrive20i accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 7.4 seconds and the BMW X1 xDrive20i in 7.8 seconds. Average fuel consumption of 7.1 litres/100 km as per the EÚ test cycle and a CO2 emission level of 165 grams are applicable to the BMW X1 sDrive20i both in conjunction with the standard six-speed manual gearbox as well as with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) The BMW X1 xDrive20i achieves an average fuel consumption of 7.7 litres/100 km (automatic: 7.6 litres) and a CO2 emission level of 179 (177) grams per kilometre. The standard BMW Efficient Dynamics technology package featured on both models comprises in addition to brake energy regeneration and on-demand control of ancillary components also the Auto Start Stop function and the gear-shift point indicator for vehicles with manual transmission as well as electromechanical power steering on the BMW X1 sDrive20i.

The exterior of the BMW X1.2012 BMW X1
Agility + Elegance = Joy. The new BMW X1 formula. At first glance a compact X model, on second glance the challenge of getting to know something new. It starts with the design: rising lateral lines lend the new BMW X1 a dynamic shape, while short overhangs and a sloping rear windscreen create a sporty, elegant silhouette. At the front, the distinctively shaped bonnet and the three-eye look of the headlights make for a striking impact, while the L-shaped taillights in conjunction with the horizontal flow of lines visually broaden the rear. All told, the design of the BMW X1 has a very simple message: it is joy in material form.

The interior of the BMW X1.

2012 BMW X1
Ergonomic design needs no lengthy explanation; it's something you sense immediately. That's why everything in the cabin of the new BMW X1 is geared towards one simple goal: intuitive operation with the maximum feel-good factor. The entire cockpit is oriented towards the driver and, thanks to its clear lines, guides the eyes to the road ahead. The raised seating position provides a particularly good overview, including of the interior: high-end materials, perfectly attuned colours, outstanding workmanship, and many convenient details.
The four-cylinder petrol engines in the BMW xDrive28i and sDrive18i.

2012 BMW X1
The four-cylinder versions xDrive28i and sDrive18i impress thanks to their precise response and efficient fuel consumption.
The BMW TwinPower Turbo in the BMW xDrive28i boasts spontaneous power build-up at all revs. Its rapid response converts the driver's wishes directly into forward thrust. This 180 kW (245 hp) drive unit lets the facts supply the emotions: from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds with a fuel consumption of only 7.9 litres per 100 km.
The sDrive18i has a little less spirit but offers an equal amount of driving pleasure. Modern valve technology supplies the motor with the correct quantity of air at all times. The 110 kW (150 hp) engine consumes 8.2 litres over 100 km and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.7 seconds.

The four-cylinder diesel engine in the BMW X1.

The BMW X1 xDrive23d features the world's first four-cylinder diesel engine with Variable Twin Turbo. Two different-sized turbochargers are deployed sequentially to deliver blistering power right across the rev range. At low revs, the small turbocharger works on its own to provide instantaneous throttle response. Third-generation common rail injection in the BMW X1 sDrive18d, BMW X1 xDrive18d, BMW X1 sDrive20d and BMW X1 xDrive20d ensures exceptional performance (up to 130 kW / 177 hp) in hand with unbeatable fuel consumption levels (starting at a frugal 5.2 litres per 100 kilometres). The diesel engines in the BMW X1 meet the EÚ5 emissions standard.

The six-speed transmission in the BMW X1.

Smooth and responsive, the 6-speed manual transmission in the BMW X1 makes for dynamic driving at its best. Its standout features are the short-throw shifts, perfect ratios and optimum exploitation of torque. The closely spaced gear ratios and the addition of a sixth gear enable the driver to make even more individual use of the engine's characteristics. The optional 6-speed automatic transmission Steptronic delivers smooth driving with exceptional reaction speed, combining instant power when pulling out and reduced fuel consumption at high speeds. Both transmission systems provide maximum dynamic performance in the full speed range and unmatched efficiency for short and long distances alike.
The eight-speed automatic transmission Steptronic in the BMW X1 xDrive28i.

Only the rev counter will reveal how quickly and comfortably the new 8-speed automatic transmission Steptronic changes gear. The additional gears reduce the rev interval of the engine between shifts making them barely perceptible. At high speeds the eighth gear reduces revs to increase comfort and lower fuel consumption. The system is also supported by the newly developed converter clutch – even if you use the electronic gearshift lever or the optional paddle switches on the steering wheel to change manually.

Performance Control in the BMW X1.

This optional technology for xDrive models uses dynamic engine and braking intervention to improve cornering behaviour, thus boosting driving pleasure and enhancing safety at the same time. Through targeted braking, optimal torque is distributed to the individual wheels depending on the driving situation. Performance Control also optimises engine performance management by gently breaking the rear wheel on the inside of the bend while at the same time increasing torque to the wheel on the outside of the bend. This allows for particularly dynamic conerning with the best possible grip. The new BMW X1 also responds to steering commands more spontaneously, for increased agility and sporty driving.

xDrive on the BMW X1.

Superior dynamics on every surface: xDrive is the all-wheel drive system which feeds engine power to both axles of the BMW X1 as the situation requires. As the driver, you can enjoy the X1's power and agility to the full because this intelligent system automatically adapts to the terrain you are driving on. Whether you are on a twisting road, attempting a hill start or tackling slippery surfaces, maximum traction is guaranteed.

Servotronic power steering in the BMW X1.

The optional Servotronic power steering in the BMW X1 xDrive20d and xDrive23d ensures optimal steering responsiveness in any situation. Servotronic adjusts the amount of steering assistance to suit the current speed, enhancing driver comfort by lowering the effort needed to turn the steering wheel. It provides light-footed responsiveness and agility at higher speeds and effortless agility when parking or in narrow, angular curves.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) in the BMW X1.

Off-road driving requires a light touch: slightly increased wheel slip and light drifts are actually a plus in certain situations. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) does just that: as an adjunct to Dynamic Stability Control, DTC optimises propulsive power and enables a more sporting driving style. The increased tolerance for wheel slip also facilitates initial acceleration on loose surfaces such as sand, gravel or snow. DSC takes a back seat and intervenes only when absolutely necessary. If desired, DSC can be completely deactivated.

2012 BMW X1The BMW X model – produced at BMW Plant Leipzig – will take the leap across the pond with a renewed spring in its step, the result of a carefully judged honing of its core qualities. The design of the BMW X1 body now provides an even more intense expression of the car's muscular presence, contemporary allure and versatile sporting capability. Its interior includes newly designed surfaces, more polished controls and high-quality touches exuding the exclusive premium ambience of a compact BMW X model.

The BMW X1 has adopted a pioneering role among its premium class rivals in its existing markets – and a repeat performance in the ÚSA is on the cards. Blending the versatility and robustness of a BMW X model with a high level of agility and compact exterior dimensions, the X1 has set new standards from the word go. Powerful engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a broad spread of BMW EfficientDynamics technology fitted as standard worldwide give the new BMW X1 the tools to further increase its lead over the competition in terms of sporting ability and efficiency.

Design: new touches to sharpen its contemporary looks and enhance its versatility and sporting flair.
Typical BMW proportions, expressive, vibrant surfaces and signature BMW X model design cues shape the appearance of the BMW X1. A sweeping bonnet, long wheelbase and set-back passenger compartment emphasise the car's dynamic talent, while attractive light and shade effects hint at its inherent agility. The versatility and robustness of a BMW X model are reflected in elements such as the black edging at the lower edge of the body and wide wheel arches.

When viewed from the front, the powerful stance of the new BMW X1 on the road and its aura of quality are now accentuated with even greater intensity. A larger number of surfaces painted in body colour highlight the car's enhanced elegance. The path of the car's lines, which converge on the license plate mount from either side of the BMW kidney and forge outwards in the lower section of the bumper, is borrowed from BMW X models in higher vehicle segments. The newly designed headlights allow a detailed view of the advanced light technology within. And a chrome-coated accent strip now cuts across the top of the twin circular headlights. Meanwhile, an LED accent light – included as part of the optional xenon light package, complete with LED light rings for the daytime driving lights – provides the classic BMW focused look.

The swage line rising steadily to the rear of the car, another character line extending the contours of the side window surrounds as it heads towards the rear, and powerfully bulging wheel arches allow the BMW X1 to cut a very distinctive figure side-on. The pronounced side skirts are a signature feature of BMW X models, while the side direction indicators are now integrated into the newly designed exterior mirrors.

The premium feel of the new BMW X1 is also underlined at the rear by the new subdivision of apron, bumper and underguard, with the repositioned reflectors now also bordered by surfaces painted in body colour. As a result, the black plastic elements are slimmer, while the silver-coloured underguard has a more striking surface structure.

Interior: precise lines, high-quality materials, sophisticated colour scheme.
The modifications to the design of the new BMW X1 interior create an even more vivid showcase of the sporty driving pleasure, cutting-edge versatility and premium feel this car provides. The side of the centre console angled towards the driver is now shallower, spotlighting the driver-focused nature of the cockpit design.

High-quality electroplated surrounds for the gearshift lever and centre console cupholder, a chrome strip for the headlight switch and chrome touches for the side edging of the Control Display – when the optional navigation system is specified – add the finishing touches to the interior's cloak of exclusivity. Plus, the air vent surrounds are given a high-gloss black surface.

The BMW X1: more sporting and efficient than ever.
The variants of the BMW X1 offered in the ÚS market are powered by BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engines. This package of technology consists of twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Direct Petrol Injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos variable camshaft control. In both the award-winning six-cylinder in-line engine under the bonnet of the BMW X1 xDrive35i – developing 225 kW/306 hp – and the 180 kW/245 hp four-cylinder unit powering the BMW X1 sDrive28i and BMW X1 xDrive28i it ensures instantaneous power delivery, impressive pulling power and exceptional efficiency.

Both engines link up as standard with an automatic gearbox and extensive BMW EfficientDynamics technology. Features including the Auto Start-Stop function (28i only), Brake Energy Regeneration, Electric Power Steering, the need-based operation of ancillary units and tyres with low rolling resistance all help to achieve a blend of performance and fuel economy unmatched by any rival.

The BMW X1 sDrive28i with customary BMW rear-wheel drive and the all-wheel-drive xDrive35i will be offered exclusively in the ÚS market. The intelligent all-wheel drive of the BMW X1 xDrive35i and BMW X1 xDrive28i varies the distribution of drive between the front and rear wheels, as required. This electronically controlled power distribution ensures optimum traction and unbeatable directional stability in all weather and road conditions, as well as noticeably sportier responses through dynamically taken corners.
