1983 Porsche 928S

The 1983 Porsche 928 models now had an 'S' suffix added to their name, becoming the 928S. The 'S' indicated a larger V8 engine under the hood. Displacement rose from 273 CID to 283 CID. Horsepower, too, rose from 220 SAE net horsepower to 234 SAE horsepower. The liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, aluminum-alloy V-8 engine gave the 928S a top speed of approximately 145 mph. The 928S transaxle design placed the engine in the front and the transmission towards the rear to produce a nearly perfect 50/50 front-to-rear weight distribution for improved handling and more balanced braking properties. The creation of a high polar moment of inertia reduced pitching, resisted crosswinds, and increased directional control. The 928S unique Weissach rear axle optimized rear-wheel alignment during deceleration, braking, and cornering. A kinematic effect changes toe-out to toe-in in no more than an advertised .02 seconds to assist in controlling oversteer. The standard gearbox was a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and a five-speed manual gearbox was available at no additional cost. The 2+2 coupe had a base price of $43,000.

The 928S had an aerodynamic design that included front and rear spoilers which helped reduce lift and improve road holding.

Standard equipment included an adjustable tilt steering column and gauge cluster, power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel vented four-wheel disc brakes, power driver's seat, cruise control, electrically heated and adjustable side view mirrors, retractable halogen headlights with power spray-washing system, and automatic climate control.
