1982 Datsun 280ZX

The 1981 Datsun six-cylinder engine was given a compression change, now rated at 8.8:1 and boosting horsepower to 145 bhp (an increase of 13 over the prior year). The 280ZX was available as a 2-person hatchback coupe and a 2+2 hatchback. Standard equipment and options were the same as the 1980 models.

Pricing for the 280ZX ranged from $11,300 - $17,000.

With the Garrett AiResearch turbocharged engine (which added a 7.3 psi boost), the 280ZX produced 120 horsepower. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard, as were the disc brakes at all four corners. Zero-to-sixty MPH for the turbocharged version was done in just 7.1 seconds. The top speed was in the neighborhood of 89 mph.

For 1982, Datsun produced a total of 1,815,792 passenger cars, of which about 470,246 were sold in the United States.

For 1982, the turbo versions could be purchased with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a three-speed automatic. All models were given a NACA-style hood scoop, as introduced on the Turbo. Also new were the urethane body-color bumpers and the grille was slightly modified. In the back, the tail lamps were slightly updated and bodyside moldings blended into the profile a little better than in prior years.

New mechanical features included power steering as standard equipment and a voice warning system.

Pricing ranged from $14,500 - $18,300. The base 280ZX six-cylinder engine produced 145 horsepower while the turbocharged version produced 180 bhp.
