1984 Toyota Celica

The 1982 Toyota Celica wore all-new styling and came equipped with a new 122 cubic-inch overhead-cam engine that produced nearly 100 horsepower. The dual-overhead-cam versions produced more, rated at between 115 to 135 horsepower. In 1988, Toyota enhanced the performance even further with the addition of a turbocharger, which gave the rear-wheel-drive vehicle 190 horsepower. The Celicas destined for the North American market received the 2.4L 22R or 22R-E engine. Fuel injection became standard on all North American Celicas starting from August 1982 (22R-E engine).

As the Celica was ending its model lifecycle, Toyota introduced a sports version of the Celica Camry equipped with the dual overhead camshaft 2-liter engine from the Celica producing 135 horsepower.

This third generation of the Celica, in production from August of 1981 to July of 1984, was available as a notchback coupe and liftback, and the US-made convertible became available in 1984.

The GT-S version arrived in North America in August of 1982 and came equipped with 14x7 wheels wrapped with 225/60HR14 tires. To accommodate these larger wheels, the fenders were flared and an independent suspension system was installed at the rear. The interiors gained special seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob. Optional rear louvers could be installed for the coupe and liftback body styles.

A styling revision was introduced in August of 1983 for the 1984 model year, distinguished by fully retractable headlights flanking a restyled grille, and an airdam. The rear combination lamps also received styling updates.

A limited number of 200 examples were built in 1984 with a convertible top built by the American Sunroof Company (ASC). These were known as the GT-S and its popularity resulted in an additional 4,248 examples built for the 1985 model year.

The Celica shared its wheelbase size with the Corona and the Carina, however, the Carina was shorter than both the Celica and the Corona. The Celica rested on a 98.4-inch wheelbase, had an overall length of 174.6 inches, stood 51.6 inches tall, and was 65.6 inches wide.
