1962 Mercedes-Benz 220 Series Navigation
Mercedes-Benz introduced four new models in 1959 at the Frankfurt Show and all rested atop the same basic unitary-construction bodyshell and were suspended all-round by an independent setup. The styling was new with a wrap-around windscreen, wider rear window, discrete tail fins, and vertically positioned twin headlamps. The footprint was longer than its predecessors and at the front was a wider radiator shell.

Auction entries : 1All models received the single-overhead camshaft six-cylinder (M127) engine with a 2,195cc displacement. The 220Sb saloon had twin carburetors and produced 110 horsepower at 5,00 RPM. The range-topping 220SEb had a Bosch fuel injection system that boosted output to 120 hp at 4,800 RPM. The 220SE also had fuel injection and an increased compression ratio of 8.7:1. The 220SE Ponton saloon was distinguished from its less expensive siblings through the use of additional chrome and twin rear bumpers. The coupe body style was introduced first and was followed a short time later by a cabriolet. Styling on both body styles were similar, with the cabriolet's soft-top roof capable of being folded into a recess behind the rear seat. The coupe could be optioned with a sliding sunroof, individual rear seats, an automatic transmission, and power steering. The Hydrak automatic clutch was not a popular option and a proper four-speed automatic transmission was made available from 1961.
