1963 Chevrolet Chevy II Series

Chevrolet introduced the Chevy II for the 1962 model year as a compact car with a conventional front-wheel-drive layout to complement its rear-wheel-drive Corvair. Three trim options were offered, including the 100 Series, 300 Series, and Nova 400 Series. A short-lived 200 Series was also available but discontinued nearly immediately. Body styles included a two-door coupe, four-door sedan, convertible, and station wagon. It used semi-unibody construction with the front section joined to its unitized cabin and rear section, and clothed with squarish styling. Many of the components were bolted-on for easy replacement, including the fenders.

The styling introduced for 1962 continued through 1965, followed by an extensive restyling for 1966 with sharper edges sourced from the Super Nova Concept car. In the front were a bold grille, single headlights, vertical taillights, 'humped' fenders, and a semi-fastback roofline.

The 'Chevy II' nameplate was dropped after 1968, with 'Nova' becoming a model rather than a trim designation. The Nova was replaced by the Chevrolet Citation for 1980 but returned in 1985 and produced through 1988.

The 1963 Chevy II
The 1963 Chevy II received minor exterior changes. Inside, it received new upholstery and trim. Between the Chevy II's three series, the 100, 300, and Nova 400, there was a total of 10 body styles. A new Super Sport (SS) option exclusive to the Nova 400 Sport Models added additional options for Chevy II buyers.

On the hood was Chevrolet lettering which replaced the thin, wide medallion. The base 100 series models did not have body side trim. The Series 300 had moldings along the bodysides. The Novas were styled similarly, plus wheel discs and rocker sill moldings. Another distinguishing feature was the identification script on the rear fenders. Other features included foam rear seats, floor carpets, Deluxe trim, special upholstery, and back-up lights.

Super Sport models had 'SS' badging, finned wheel covers, wider bodyside moldings, and aluminized rear panels.

Standard equipment on the Chevy II were 6.00 x 13 black tubeless tires, a heater, a defroster, foam cushions on the front, a cigarette lighter, and electric windshield wipers.

Chevrolet produced 146,097 examples of their Chevy II four-door sedan. There was an additional 87,415 Sport Coupes, 72,274 four-door station wagons, and 42,017 two-door sedans. The Nova 400 also had a convertible, of which 24,823 were produced. Total Chevy II production was 375,600 cars.

The Chevy II was powered by a four-cylinder, overhead-valve engine that offered 90 horsepower. The six-cylinder option displaced 194.4 cubic-inches, had hydraulic valve lifters, seven main bearings, a Rochester one-barrel carburetor, cart-iron block, and delivered 120 horsepower at 4,400 RPM.
