1924 Dodge Brothers Series 116

The 1924 Dodge models made its introduction at the New York Automobile show in January of 1924. The models were divided into Standard, Special, and Custom bodies. Features on the Special line included nickel-plated radiators, automobile windshield wipers, and bumpers. They also had motometer type radiator caps and bright metal running board step plates.

For 1924 Dodge received updates that included a higher hood line and a taller radiator. The suspension was changed from a three-quarter elliptic springs to a semi-elliptic setup. The wheelbase measured 116 inches and the engine was an L-head 212.3 cubic-inch four-cylinder unit offering 35 horsepower. The engine was mated to a three-speed selective sliding transmission and there were two-wheel mechanical brakes. The car rode on Budd-Michelin steel disc wheels on the roadster and the closed body styles. The closed cars also had a flat, slanted sun visor with curved corner brackets.

Standard equipment included a rear brake light.

The Dodge Brothers, John and Horace, established their first machine shop in 1900. Ransom E. Olds and Henry Ford - among others - noticed their talents and bought engines, transmissions, and axles from the Dodge Brothers. By 1913, the brothers realized they could built their own automobile, a realization that coincided with Henry Ford deciding to move production of his cars' components in-house.

The Dodge Brother's cars quickly earned a reputation as a sturdy vehicle that offered superior reliability and could be run for years with only the most basic of maintenance.

This particular vehicle is a 1924 Standard Touring car that was acquired by Richard Roy from John Schramm, of Rockland, Maine, in 2003. It has remained part of the collection for 12 years. Former owners include John Colgan Futty, of Maryland, as well as Christopher Eby, of Paradise, Pennsylvania.

Powering this Touring Car is an L-head four-cylinder engine displacing 212.3 cubic-inches and offering 35 horsepower. There is a three-speed selective-shift manual transmission and rear-wheel mechanical drum brakes.
