2013 Kia Sportage
IRVINE, Calif., July 11, 2012 - The Sportage compact crossover returns to the Kia lineup for 2013 with the same head-turning design, impressive power, class-leading fuel efficiency and a plethora of comfort and convenience features. Having received numerous awards and critical acclaim since its launch in 2010, Sportage was most recently recognized by the Únited Services Automobile Association (ÚSAA) as a 'Best Value' in 2011 and 2012 and named a 2012 'Best Buy' by Consumers Digest. It continues to be a top contender in the ever-growing compact CÚV segment.

2013 Kia SportageBuilding on an already successful formula of strong attributes, the 2013 Sportage returns with additional exterior and interior enhancements, including standard LED headlamp accent lighting (LX and EX trims), power folding side mirrors (optional on EX and standard on SX), upgraded leather on the steering wheel (standard on EX and SX), a standard sun visor extender and an optional Blue Interior Package.

Kia's ÚVO powered by Microsoft®2 voice-activated infotainment system, offered standard on Sportage EX and SX models and as part of the Navigation Package starting in 2012, has been moved to the Convenience Package for 2013 and remains standard for the EX and SX trims. ÚVO improves connectivity, and convenience by enabling drivers and passengers to speak via hands-free phone, access music from a variety of media sources and create custom music experiences all with voice-activation.

To reduce cabin noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) and improve driving dynamics, all Sportage models feature rear dynamic suspension dampers, floor insulation and standard high-performance dampers on EX models. LX trims also come standard with 17-inch wheels and low-rolling-resistance tires.

Also standard on Sportage EX trims with cloth seating, the Clean Tex™ treatment provides anti-bacterial, anti-soil and anti-static properties to the seat fabric for added durability and livability. An available low washer fluid warning indicator (with Supervision™ meter cluster), standard floor console and cup holder rubber mat, and available folding key for keyless entry-equipped vehicles also are offered on the EX trim.

Compelling Exterior Design
Available in four trims – base, LX, EX and SX – the 2013 Kia Sportage offers a high beltline, sweeping angles and pronounced wheel flares, conveying an indomitable road presence with an aggressive, hunkered-down stance. The full-sectioned body, defined by a spearing shoulder line throughout the length of the car, helps to visually connect the headlamps and tail lights. The crispness of this line, together with its lowered body, creates a distinct sense of precision while the pronounced C pillar conveys an air of solidity and balance when viewed from the side.

Like all vehicles across the Kia lineup, the Sportage's front end proudly displays the face of the brand's signature tabbed grille and dramatic swept back headlamps. The dynamically sculpted hood, framed by a distinctive windshield design, adds to Sportage's fresh appeal. The rear view offers a clean and contemporary look with dynamic tail lights set within the rear lift gate.

Starting with the base trim, Sportage offers numerous standard exterior features, including 16-inch alloy wheels matched with 215/70R16 low-rolling-resistance silica tires, body-color door handles, body-color and electronically adjustable side mirrors and a six-speed manual transmission. (posted on conceptcarz.com) Moving to the LX adds standard 17-inch alloy wheels, LED turn signals on the outside mirrors, keyless entry with folding key, six-speed electronically controlled Sportmatic™ automatic transmission, solar glass, privacy glass, and now LED accent lighting along the headlamps for a sportier, more upscale appearance.

2013 Kia SportageThe popularly-equipped EX trim offers stylish 18-inch alloy wheels mated with 235/55R18 tires, high performance dampers, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, a rear spoiler, fog lamps and chrome body trim and door handles. The top-of-the-line Sportage SX adds a powerful yet fuel-efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI engine producing 260-horsepower, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust, sculpted side sill moldings and unique SX grille. New for 2013, power folding side mirrors are now available on the EX (optional) and SX (standard) trims.

Functional, Engaging Interior Space
The sleek exterior design of the Sportage flows seamlessly into the interior, creating an inviting and comfortable environment with a host of convenience and technology features. With the signature three-gauge instrument cluster set prominently within the dash, Sportage's interior exudes contemporary design and a sporty driving experience.

An impressive collection of technology features come standard on the 2013 Sportage, including an AM/FM/CD/MP3/Sat audio system with available SiriusXM™3 Satellite Radio with three months complimentary service, standard auxiliary and ÚSB audio input jacks with MP3 capability, Bluetooth®4 hands-free phone and streaming audio connectivity with steering wheel-mounted voice activation controls allow drivers to keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

All Sportage models feature a long list of standard convenience features including air conditioning, power windows with one-touch down functionality, electronically adjustable side mirrors, 12-volt power outlets in the passenger and cargo compartments, tilt-adjustable steering wheel, and six-way adjustable front seats. Stylishly appointed cloth seats come standard and provide comfortable seating while 60/40 split-folding rear seats effortlessly accommodate driver and passenger cargo needs. 2013 also brings a standard sun visor extender on all trims for increased driver and passenger comfort.

The popular EX trim raises the level of refinement and convenience for Sportage owners with a standard ÚVO system, premium audio with an external amplifier and sub-woofer, HD Radio®5, rearview back-up camera6, back-up warning system, fully automatic dual-zone temperature control air-conditioner with ionized filtration, a power driver's seat with lumbar support for additional comfort and support, automatic headlamp system, automatic folding second row seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob – now with upgraded, softer leather – telescopic steering wheel, illuminated vanity mirrors, and illuminated and cooled glove box. EX trim levels come equipped with an active EcoMinder™ indicator for optimal fuel-efficient driving.

The most powerful of Kia's compact CÚVs, the Sportage SX model adds even more driving excitement and modern amenities. In addition to a powerful and efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI engine under the hood, SX models offer standard push-button start with Smart Key, aluminum scuff plates providing a more upscale feel, leather seating, an innovative Supervision gauge cluster and power folding side mirrors.

Available upgrades and options for the LX trim include a Convenience Package, with the ÚVO powered by Microsoft® system, a backup camera, backup warning system, telescopic steering wheel, roof rails, a rear spoiler, heated side mirrors, floor mats, cargo cover, sun visor mirror illumination and a cooling glove box. The optional Navigation Package for the LX trim comes equipped with navigation with SiriusXM Traffic™ data and a premium Infinity®7 audio system with an external amplifier and sub-woofer.

Sportage EX models can be further enhanced with an available Premium Package encompassing such features as leather-trimmed seats, heated front seats, an air-cooled driver's seat, push button start with Smart Key, heated side mirrors, power folding side mirrors, auto dimming mirror with Homelink®8, cargo cover, Supervision meter cluster and a panoramic sunroof. Also available is a voice-activated navigation system with SiriusXM Traffic data. New for 2013, the Sportage EX also offers an available Blue Interior Package, including dark blue cloth seats, dark blue interior accents and a black headliner.

Moving up to the SX trim, consumers can enjoy a Premium Package that includes heated front seats, air-cooled driver's seat, auto-dimming mirror with Homelink, heated side mirrors, a cargo cover and a panoramic sunroof. The SX trim also is available with the voice-activated navigation system with SiriusXM Traffic data.

Advanced Platform and Improved Comfort
Lower and wider than the previous generation vehicle, Sportage's design and dimensions (overall length: 174.8 inches; overall width: 73 inches; wheelbase: 103.9 inches) contribute to optimal driver visibility as well as outstanding handling characteristics. Built on a unibody platform, Sportage employs independent front and rear suspension systems with MacPherson high performance struts in the front fine-tuned to improve driving feel and stability, while new side-load coil springs reduce friction. A multi-link rear suspension featuring new high-performance dampers and coil springs are mounted separately to minimize cabin intrusion and enhance Sportage's handling characteristics.

With ample NVH reduction measures in place, the advanced suspension design provides a comfortable ride while also offering dynamic handling characteristics and increased responsiveness. The suspension is mounted on lightweight, hydro-formed subframes, to help isolate occupants from road irregularities while the increased use of high tensile strength steel helps to reduce vehicle weight, improve stability and reduce vibration.

Dynamic Powertrains Offering Power and Class-Leading Fuel Efficiency
For 2013 the Sportage continues to offer fun-to-drive performance as well as fuel efficiency. An efficient 2.4-liter DOHC 16-valve four-cylinder engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) – standard on base, LX and EX trims – offers 176 horsepower and can come equipped with either a six-speed manual with front-wheel drive or automatic transmission with either front-wheel (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). A standard 2.0-liter turbocharged GDI engine mated with the six-speed automatic transmission is available on SX models offering increased output of 260 horsepower. All automatics feature Sportmatic clutchless shifting.

Drivers also can expect the same impressive fuel economy as before on all engine/transmission configurations, with the 2.4-liter offering 21/29 mpg (city/highway) when mated with the six-speed manual transmission and FWD, a class-leading 22/32 mpg (city/highway) when paired with the six-speed automatic and FWD and 21/28 mpg (city/highway) with the six-speed and AWD. Moving to the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine doesn't mean sacrificing fuel efficiency, with the powerful unit providing 22/29 when equipped with FWD and 21/26 with AWD.

The Sportage's Dynamax™ AWD system, co-developed by Kia Motors Corporation and Magna International, Inc., uses vehicle speed, traction control sensors and driver input to continuously monitor driving conditions, allowing the system to better anticipate AWD system requirements compared to the reactionary systems offered on other vehicles. This provides drivers the benefits of improved lateral stability while cornering and reduces wheel slippage in the front and rear. Aimed at achieving increased torque and improved performance on varied surfaces, Dynamax offers true AWD for a confidence-inspiring driving experience. The system also works to maximize fuel efficiency while helping to maintain a high-level of vehicle controllability.

Sportage's AWD design delivers 100 percent of engine torque to the front wheels during normal driving conditions, enhancing fuel economy, and immediately transfers the appropriate percentage of power and torque to the rear axle when wheel slippage is detected, helping to maintain forward momentum. For enhanced stability when driving in slippery conditions, such as rain, snow, mud, unpaved roads or off-road, the driver can manually select the 'Lock Mode9,' which helps to distribute torque evenly between front and rear axles up to 25 mph.

Advanced Safety Features
The 2013 Sportage is equipped with an impressive array of standard safety equipment. All trims come outfitted with driver and passenger advanced front airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, first and second row side curtain airbags, front active headrests, four-wheel Antilock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Brake Control (DBC) also come standard on all models, the former assisting in preventing the vehicle from rolling backward when trying to pull on an uphill gradient, while the latter helps keep the vehicle moving straight and steady down steep grades.

Industry-Leading Warranty
The 2013 Sportage is covered by Kia's comprehensive warranty program10, which offers consumer protection at an exceptional value. Included in this program are a 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, a five-year/60,000-mile limited basic warranty and a five-year/100,000-mile anti-perforation warranty. A five-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance plan also is part of the comprehensive vehicle coverage.

Kia's Únprecedented Growth
Kia Motors is one of the world's fastest moving global automotive brands; from 2009-2011 Kia launched more new vehicles in the Ú.S. than any other automaker, and under the guidance of chief design officer Peter Schreyer earned a reputation as an industry leader in automotive styling. Kia Motors America's full line of fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive cars and CÚVs has earned critical acclaim and dramatically increased consumer awareness, perception and consideration for the brand. In 2011, KMA recorded its 17th consecutive year of market share growth, thanks in part to the largest increase of any major brand in perceived quality11 and the industry's highest brand loyalty ranking12. Kia's Ú.S.-based manufacturing facility in West Point, Georgia – KMMG – is responsible for the creation of more than 10,000 plant and supplier jobs and builds two of the company's best-selling vehicles in the Ú.S. – the Sorento CÚV and Optima midsize sedan*. Kia's value and technology-laden lineup also includes the Sportage compact CÚV, Soul urban passenger vehicle, Optima Hybrid, Forte compact sedan, Forte 5-door compact hatchback, Forte Koup two-door coupe, Rio and Rio 5-door sub-compacts and Sedona minivan.
