The Mercedes-Benz R129, introduced for the 1984 model year, rested on a shortened floorpan of the Mercedes-Benz W124 and came with numerous innovations including the electronically controlled damping system and a hidden, automatically extending roll-over bar. The prior semi-trailing arm rear suspension of the R107 was replaced with a modern multi-link axle setup. Among the numerous standard features were electric action for the windows, seats, mirrors, and a hydraulic convertible top. The seat belts were integrated into the seats as opposed to anchoring to the floor, transmission tunnel, and B-pillar. The Mercedes-Benz 500SL made its debut in 1990 and continued into 1992 with very little change. The automatic convertible top worked through 15 hydraulic servos, 11 solenoids, and 17 proximity switches. The 32-valve dual overhead cam, 304 cubic-inch V8 engine offered 320 horsepower. It had a Bosch KE 5 CIS multi-point fuel injection system and an automatic transmission.The 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500SL had a base price of $37,700.
