1965 Volkswagen Transporter

Volkswagen played an important role in providing basic transportation for those interested in an affordable, well-made vehicle that offered unique styling. The Volkswagen Microbus first arrived on the American continent in 1949, and it quickly became popular as an efficient and practical people mover. It was an instant hit with the 'flower power' generation of the '60s, and its boxy design made it the perfect canvas for pop-art flowers, psychedelic paint schemes, and peace signs. The Transporter shared the Type 1 Beetle running gear which meant it had excellent ground clearance and an ability to run economically. The iconic vehicle, adorned by generations of enthusiasts, had modest power output and low top speed.

The first-generation split-window Volkswagen Transporter is also known as the Microbus, van, Kombi, bus and camper. The Type 2 Transporter T1, produced from 1950 to 1967, was offered in a variety of configurations from utilitarian panel van and pickup to the well-appointed Deluxe, which included its skylight ports, and opening front windshield. The 21 Window model was produced only from 1964 through 1967, and was dubbed the 'Samba.'

For 1965, the Volkswagen Transporter received only minor changes. The '1500' horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine which had been an option was now standard. It had a 91.1 cubic-inch displacement size and offered 50 horsepower. There was a four-speed manual gearbox, hydraulic drum brakes, and a worm-and-sector steering system. The suspension was independent at the front and rear with torsion bars and shock absorbers. The wheelbase measured 94.5 inches. Prices ranged from $2135 - $2575 depending on options and body style.
