The Ford Thunderbird received a new emblem for 1985, which was placed on taillamp lenses. Other changes included full-width wraparound taillamps with inboard backup lamps, and a new color-keyed grille. Changes were made to the interior as well, including a new instrument panel with digital speedometer. The back seat received a third seatbelt. A shorter center console allowed three passengers to sit in the rear seat. The Thunderbird could be purchased as the base model, Elan, Fila, and Turbo Coupe. The Fila models had a color-keyed grille replacing the brightwork. They also had charcoal paint with dark charcoal lower accents and charcoal windshield moldings. The Elan models had wide bodyside moldings. Luxury amenities included interval wipers, dual electric remote mirrors, power windows, digital clock, tinted glass, AM/FM stereo with cassette, diagnostic warning lights, and a light group.
Except for the Turbo Coupe, the Thunderbird was powered by a 3.8-liter V6 with a three-speed automatic gearbox.

Powering the Turbo Coupe was a four-cylinder, 2.3-liter engine fitted with a turbocharger. For 1985, the engine received an electronic boost control and higher flow-rate fuel injectors, resulting in an increase in power. The engine was mated to a five-speed gearbox with updated gear ratios.
