1998 Pontiac Firebird

For 1998, the Pontiac Firebird Formula Convertible was no longer offered. Still, buyers had five models to choose from, including the base coupe and convertible, a Formula Coupe, Trans Am Coupe, and Trans Am Convertible. Just 2,119 convertibles were purchased while 30,038 buyers selected the coupe. Prices ranged from $18,000 to nearly $30,000. The base engine was an overhead valve V6 displacing 3.8 liters and offering 200 horsepower. The standard engine in the Formula and Trans Am models was an eight-cylinder unit displacing 5.7-liters and offering 305 horsepower. That figure rose to 320 with the WS6 Ram Air Package. A five-speed manual gearbox was standard on the base model. A six-speed manual was standard for the Formula and Trans Am models. Buyers could purchase an optional four-speed automatic if they desired. Ventilated disc brakes were in the front and the rear and they had a rack-and-pinion steering system.

Changes to the 1998 Firebird included a restyled front fascia that had a new headlamp design. In the back was an updated taillight design. The standard 4-wheel disc brakes were new, and the suspension received modifications. An AutoCross Package (1LE) added even more revisions, modifications, and updates to the suspension system.
