The M3 was presented as the first M model in the BMW 3 Series at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1985. It was developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH with the aim of creating a basic vehicle for motor sport and also developing a sporty automobile suitable for everyday road use. This M3 became the most successful touring car in motor sport.
CoupeFrom 1986 through 1990, a total of 17,184 examples were produced. The 1987 version was powered by a four-cylinder, 2302cc engine offering nearly 200 horsepower and mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Disc brakes could be found at all four corners.
