1969 Fiat Shellette

Ghia tested the yacht-gliding waters with its 500- and 600-based Jolly. Popular with the wealthy, these 'beach cars' offered the ultimate in open-air seaside motoring. The rear-engine Jolly had a canvas-awning top, picnic gear, and a wicker interior. Success with the Jolly inspired other European coachbuilders to create their own similarly themed vehicles.

Stylist Giovanni Michelotti collaborated with yacht designer Philip Schell on a new beach car concept, combining the simplicity and basic architecture of the Jolly with the jet-age aesthetics of a Fiat 850 Spider. The modern styling was complimented with amenities such as a heater and stereo, items devoid on the spartan Jolly. While most examples remained at seaside homes or used as yacht tenders, its four-cylinder 903cc OHV engine with approximately 47 to 52 horsepower allowed it to travel on the roads with speeds approaching 60 mph. Ample stopping power was courtesy of the front disc and rear drum brakes. It had a four-speed manual gearbox, an independent suspension with upper and lower wishbones, shock absorbers, and rear coil springs.

Like the Jolly, the Shellette was exclusive, with approximately 80 examples produced. Also known as the Spiaggetta or 850 Spiaggetta by Michelotti, its list of clientele included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and the Italian Agusta industrial family.
