1960 Tholen Thundermug H-Mod Special

Dale Tholen was among an elite class of builders who constructed racing specials using Crosley power. His first Crosley-powered car was attractive and successful. It had a fiberglass body designed by Tholen and powered by a single overhead cam 750cc Crosley engine mated to a Fiat four-speed gearbox.

Mr. Tholen's second attempt at building a racing special was the Thundermug. The chassis was constructed from steel tubing and clothed in a lightweight fiberglass body. Instead of using a Crosley engine, Tholen selected a hand-built engine assembled mostly from parts from a 3 Maico single-cylinder motor. The engine was soon replaced with a Crosley engine.
