1973 Chevrolet Nova

The original, first-generation Chevy II / Nova's rested on a 110-inch wheelbase and had a length of 183 inches. The third generation (1968-1974) measured 111-inches for the wheelbase and had a length of 189.4 inches. The long hood housed four-, six-, and eight-cylinder engines. After 1970, only the six and eight remained. These were intended as 'economy cars' and for 1973 carried a base price of $2,375 for the 2-door coupe. The sedan listed for $2,400. Standard and Custom trim levels were available. The Nova Custom added nicer appointments and more luxurious amenities. Body styles for both the base and Custom levels included a sedan, coupe, and hatchback. The hatchback coupe had a counter-balanced panel that could be easily lifted to allow access to the rear compartment.

The base engine was a 250 cubic-inch six-cylinder engine with seven main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, a one-barrel carburetor, a cast-iron block, and rated at 100 (SAE net) horsepower. The standard V8 was a 307 cubic-inch unit with five main bearings, hydraulic valve lifters, overhead camshafts, and offering 115 (SAE net) horsepower. A two-speed Powerglide transmission was available, but this was the final year for this unit.

In the front was a new grille design that featured built-in parking lights. The Nova nameplate could be found on the left side of the grille. In the back were rectangular taillight treatments. A larger and safer bumper was installed in both the front and the back.

Several options were available including a vinyl top, air conditioning, power brakes, sky roof, and the Nova Super Sport package. A three-speed manual transmission was standard in all six-cylinder models. An automatic was standard in the V8s. A four-speed manual with floor shift controls was optional.
