1976 Pontiac Firebird

The Second Generation Pontiac Firebird was built from 1970 through 1981. For 1976, Pontiac sold 748,842 vehicles with the Firebird accounting for 110,775 of those sales. The Firebird was comprised of a Base model coupe, an Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am. Power came from an overhead valve six-cylinder engine which displaced 250 cubic-inches and offered 110 horsepower. The Firebird and Formula were powered by an overhead valve 5.7-liter V8 which had 160 horsepower. The Trans Am came with a 400 CID V8 rated at 185 horsepower. All Firebirds had body-colored urethane bumpers.

New options for 1976 included a new appearance package, called the Formula, fuel economy indicator, and a canopy top. The colors of the Trans Am included Sterling Silver, Carousel Red, Firethorn Red, Cameo White, and Goldenrod Yellow.

In the front was the twin-section grille with a mesh pattern, recessed single square headlamps, and wide park/signal lamps resting below the bumper strip.

The list of standard equipment included power steering and radial-tuned suspension. The Esprit included sport mirrors and deluxe wheel covers. The Formula Firebird had sport mirrors, a full-length console, and a 350 cubic-inch two-barrel V8 with either a four-speed manual or Turbo-Hydra Matic transmission. The Trans Am had a shaker hood, Rally II wheels with trim rings, rally gauges, rear deck lid spoiler, and an air dam.

The large 455 cubic-inch V8 would disappear after 1976.

The Pontiac Firebird

Pontiac was tired of viewing from the sidelines, while Ford introduced the Mustang, and Chevy brought out the Camaro, so in midst of 1967 Pontiac finally jumped in the ring with the all new Firebird. Available with either six or eight cylinder engines, the Firebird was based heavily on the Camaro chassis, though Pontiac did attempt to make it their own. The Camaro featured a styled split front grille,....
