Production of the Pontiac Grand Am began in 1972 and was based on the GM A platform. Production was canceled in 1980 and was replaced by the Pontiac 6000. It was re-introduced in 1985 when it replaced the Pontiac Phoenix. For 1990, the front-drive Pontiac Grand Am was available in both coupe and sedan form in LE and SE trim levels. It was the company's top-selling line and by June of 1989, had produced the one-millionth Grand Am. The 1990 Pontiac Grand Am came powered by a 2.5-liter engine with 110 horsepower. A 2.3-liter Quad-4 High Output engine offering 180 horsepower was standard on SE models. The engines came with reduced noise levels, and the cars had a new drive axle design, bigger wheels and tires, vanity mirrors and delayed interior lighting on all models. A new 'express-down' power window system was available. Standard equipment included an AM/FM stereo cassette radio, air conditioning, fog lamps, cruise control, a remote decklid release, power door locks, power windows, a WS6 suspension, aerodynamic front, body skirting, and black-finished window frames and mirrors.
For 1990, Pontiac produced 197,020 Grand Am models.
