Fun-to-Drive Multi-Activity Vehicle Flexes its Functionality Muscle for 2015

2015 Mazda 5
Flawless in its functionality, the Mazda5 multi-activity vehicle makes no excuses for its purpose in life: to make everyone's life easier. Rather than evade unhip hyphenates such as 'family-friendly' and 'value-oriented,' Mazda5 embraces them with such a grappling bear hug there is nothing left to do but go along for the ride. And with seating for six, there is more than enough room to bring family and friends along.2015 Mazda 5
'Since its launch in 2006, Mazda5 has been and continues to be unrivaled in its ability to offer functionality, design, performance and fun in a single, complete package,' said Jim O'Sullivan, president and CEO, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO). 'Combining everything active households need in terms of vehicle drivability and versatility, Mazda5 pairs perfectly with slow Sundays, fast Fridays and every day in between.'

2015 Mazda 5
A carryover model for 2015, Mazda5 continues to offer three rows of easy-to-configure seating, storage and sensibility. Coupled with standard comforts and the brand's innate driving dynamics, the 2015 Mazda5 maintains its mantra of putting the fun in functionality.

2015 Mazda 5Design Dynamics
Wrapped in Mazda's Nagare 'flow' design language which draws inspiration from nature, Mazda5 offers an elegant style absent from its bulky-is-better competitors. Breaking away from the conventional designs currently available in the market, Mazda5 is immediately distinguishable for all the right reasons. Headlight to taillight, the vehicle makes everyday responsibilities a beautiful excuse to get behind the wheel.

Mazda5's exterior appears composed of a continuous fluid motion, sweeping from its front shoulders to its rear hips. The fog lamp bezels, for example, were designed to naturally pour into the vehicle's front contours and wheel arches to present a wide, dynamic image. These blend effortlessly with the gentle S-shaped curves that extend from the front grille upwards into the headlamps. The deeply sculpted form of the hood and fog lamps gives Mazda5's front profile a strong yet approachable demeanor that emphasizes its athletic, purpose-driven styling.

The wave-like swell applied to the side panels is dynamic as the design motif connects the Mazda5's graceful character lines from its headlamps and front fenders through to its rear fenders and taillights. In the same spirit, the sliding door rails also are blended skillfully in the same fashion.

With a Nagare-esque ripple connecting the front, sides and rear of the Mazda5, the vehicle's design offers a bold and beautiful body line. Adding further appeal and lending the rear a strong yet taut look is a powerful visual line created by the prominent rear fender arches joined with the rear combination lamps. The finishing touch is the extended rear quarter and dark glass panels that completely cover the D-pillar to emphasize the vehicle's fluid design.

Interior Appeal
The exterior emotion of the Mazda5 begets its interior elegance as well. From the lines that create the instrument panel to the stitch pattern design of the seats, the overall feel is of a sporty, high-quality cabin.

The driver-oriented cockpit positions the peak of the meter hood as the tallest point, with all lines cascading to comfortably envelop around the driver. The silver-surround instrument panel pours from the cockpit to the center panel and onward towards the passenger-side dashboard. The same sentiment continues throughout the seat patterns, connecting seamlessly with the second- and third-row seats to create a strong sense of interior harmony.

Mazda5's road-ready eagerness is apparent before the ignition is turned and the engine roars. The look of its twin deep-set gauges, to the genuine leather wrapping the steering wheel, to the properly bolstered sport seats – all hint at Mazda5 being a vehicle that can evoke driver happiness. The center panel also is fitted with chrome plating and silver-trimmed controls to add to the luxurious appeal of the mostly black interior.

2015 Mazda 5Efficient, Expansive Dimensions
The 2015 Mazda5 sits on a 108.3-inch wheelbase and features an overall length of 180.5 inches, a width of 68.9 inches and is 63.6 inches in height. Its long wheelbase helps in offering unexpected passenger room while its short front and rear overhangs aid in providing precise handling and parking ease. And in spite of its length, Mazda5 features an impressively tight turning radius of 36.7 feet, making maneuvers remarkably easy in even the most constricted driving situations.

Mazda5's focus is on performance, but that isn't relegated to only behind-the-wheel excitement. When getting gear (and people) in and out of a vehicle, efficient ingress and egress prove to be immeasurable. No one wants to be stuck in a back seat or drop newly purchased items. The solution: sliding doors. A feature often derided by the anti-minivan masses but frequently exalted by the function-before-fashion crowd, these two words are extremely practical and extremely easy to operate on the Mazda5. Light enough for children to operate with a single tug, the doors create a wide opening for rear-seat accessibility. Another benefit of not having to swing open a large, heavy rear door is that side clearance needs are minimal as the doors slide snugly into the rear rails.

Surprisingly compact, the Mazda5 delivers unprecedented space within its efficient footprint. Its roomy interior is achieved thanks to three unique features: a low-profile fuel tank, a compact multi-link rear suspension and a stepped floor. Mimicking stadium seating, the floor base configuration allows for comfortable legroom for all passengers, especially those in the second and third rows. In addition, the imaginatively resourceful interior takes convenience and flexibility to a new level with its ability to be configured in a multitude of ways for any combination of passengers up to six, while still offering room for their expansive amounts of cargo.

For an added level of accessibility, the second row features separate captain's chairs, creating an open pathway to the 50/50-split fold-flat third-row bench seating. The second-row seats manually slide, recline and can be folded flat without needing to remove the headrests. They also feature a one-touch lever to automatically dip the seatback and slide itself forward as another way to access the third row. When the third row is not in use and folded flat, cargo capacity is 44.4 cubic feet.

Along with plentiful seats is the availability of nooks and crannies. Storage compartments abound, including an enormous illuminated glove box, half-liter-bottle-sized drink holders in the front doors and under-seat storage in the second row, which can be easily accessed by folding the seat-bottom cushions up. The passenger-side second-row seat also offers a fold-out tray which features additional cup holders and a mesh basket for trinkets, large and small.

Dynamic Performance
For the 2015 model year, all Mazda5 vehicles will be equipped with a standard five-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission with a manual shift mode. Paired with its low 0.30 coefficient of drag, the Mazda5 receives an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 21 city/28 highway mpg.

A proprietary Mazda Active Adaptive Shift (AAS) protocol provides the automatic transmission with the performance feedback expected of the Zoom-Zoom brand. Part-throttle downshifts are delivered in sync with a nudge of the accelerator during passing. When the vehicle is braked aggressively in anticipation of cornering, the transmission also downshifts to aid engine braking and to prepare for an expedient exit from the bend. A wide gear-ratio spread assists accelerations from a stop while also providing quiet and efficient highway cruising.

Equipped with a standard MZR 2.5-liter engine, the front-wheel-drive Mazda5 produces a maximum output of 157 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and delivers 163 lb-ft of torque. The MZR engine uses a cast aluminum cylinder block and high-strength, thin-walled sleeves as well as compact, lightweight pistons.

The flow within the intake valves reduces exhaust resistance while using Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) to deliver optimum intake valve timing whether idling in rush hour traffic or carving along S-curves. Mazda's Variable Induction System (VIS) also is utilized to improve low- to mid-range torque. The MZR 2.5-liter engine gives a linear feel to acceleration, accurate vehicle response and a light, relaxing driving performance.

The Mazda5's steering system delivers precision thanks in part to its Electro-Hydraulic Power Assist Steering (EHPAS) system. Rubber couplings added to the steering shaft joints help realize a smooth steering feel.

The suspension layout for the 2015 Mazda5 utilizes MacPherson struts in the front and a multi-link suspension in the rear that employs separate coils and dampers as part of its input separated system. The dampers are a twin-tube type and the rear dampers include integrated rebound springs. The inherent functions of these components earn the suspension high acclaim for delivering superior handling stability.

Flexible Packaging
Mazda5 is available in three trim levels: an entry-level Sport, a mid-level Touring and a features-full Grand Touring. All models offer flexibility, utility, comfort and style with consumers able to configure their trim level of choice with additional a la carte accessories. There are no equipment packages available for any Mazda5 trim, which adds a layer of simplicity and value for consumers.

The Sport trim may be seen as the 'beginner' model but is by no means devoid of features and luxuries. All Mazda5s are well equipped and, starting with the Sport model, feature standard equipment such as 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels wrapped in P205/55R16 all-season tires, power door locks and windows with a driver's side one-touch up/down feature, power outside mirrors, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, air conditioning with a pollen filter, an AM/FM/CD/MP3-compatible audio system with six speakers, auxiliary-audio input and ÚSB connection ports, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, a remote keyless illuminated entry system as well as fold-flat second- and third-row seats.

Moving up to the Touring trim, larger 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels with P205/50R17 all-season tires are added along with sport side-sill extensions, a rear lift gate spoiler, fog lamps, Bluetooth® hands-free audio and phone connectivity, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear backup sensors and a trip computer.

The features-laden Grand Touring model receive a power moonroof, leather-trimmed seats with a heated front row, driver's seat lumbar support adjustment, automatic on/off headlights, xenon high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights with low beam and manual leveling, heated door mirrors, rain-sensing windshield wipers, SiriusXM® Satellite Radio with a complimentary four-month subscription and an anti-theft alarm system.

Dealer-installed accessories available for all trim levels include an overhead DVD entertainment system, remote engine start, a portable navigation system as well as a variety of luggage and sports equipment carriers. SiriusXM Satellite Radio subscription also is available as an add-on for Sport and Touring models.

Standard Safety
The 2015 Mazda5 offers a high level of performance and stability as well as a high level of safety features. All Mazda5 vehicles are equipped with six airbags (advanced dual front, front seat-mounted and full-length side curtain), an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), a Traction Control System (TCS), a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), 'Triple H' body construction, side-impact door beams, a 'crushable' brake and accelerator pedal assembly, three-point safety belts and adjustable headrests for all seating positions, front seatbelt pretensioners with force limiters as well as Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH). Rear backup sensors are standard on Touring and Grand Touring models only.

Also, all Mazda vehicles come with the Mazda Certified Roadside Assistance Program. Úsing either the toll-free number or free Mazda Assist app for iOS- and Android-operated mobile devices, owners and their family members can contact roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the Únited States and Canada. In addition, the New Vehicle Limited Warranty includes a comprehensive three-year/36,000-mile warranty, which covers every part of the vehicle (except those subject to normal wear), a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty and a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.
