1971 Chrysler Town & Country

Station wagons were instrumental in transporting families along America's vast roadways or could be used as a closed-body alternative to pickup trucks with vast amounts of cargo-carrying capacity. During the 1940s, the Chrysler Town & Country station wagon had seating for eight and was distinguished by its wooden doors and body panels paired with an all-steel roof. Its Town & Country name meant it was suitable in either the Town or the Country, offering both style and utility. Since its introduction, the purpose of the Town & Country model has remained steadfast, offering plenty of cargo space in a stylish and luxurious package.

The 1971 Chrysler Town & Country wore styling that was introduced in 1969, its fifth major redesign since its introduction. Known as the 'fuselage design' and used throughout several Chrysler models, it featured curved sides, a high beltline, and a full-width loop-style chrome front bumper with quad headlamps recessed into the loop. It rested atop a 122-inch wheelbase and measured 225 inches in length. The unitized body and chassis were suspended by longitudinal torsion bars in the front and leaf springs at the rear. Powering the 1971 Town & Country was a 383 cubic-inch V8 engine with a two-barrel carburetor, five main bearings, an 8.5:1 compression ratio, and delivered 275 horsepower. It was paired with a three-speed A-727 automatic transmission. The bias-belted tires measured J78-15 in size.

Styling updates for 1971 were minimal, although Chrysler had intended a biennial mid-cycle face-lift for all of its large car models. Among the updates were slight changes to the grille and rear taillamp assembly. It continued to use the Brazilian wood applique on the side and back panels, but buyers could delete this if they wanted without accruing additional costs.

The well-equipped 1971 Chrysler Town & Country came standard with a left-hand remote control mirror, wheelhouse opening moldings, hood insulation, a three-speed windshield wiper, dual-action tailgate, rear roof wind deflector, undercoating, and a luggage compartment lock. The interior housed an all-vinyl front bench seat with a center armrest.
