The Ford Pinto was introduced in 1971 and was produced until 1980. For 1976, it received a new front-end design which included a new egg-crate grille of corrosion-resistance plastic and flanked by single round headlamps. The base engine was an overhead cam four-cylinder unit of 2.3-liter size and offered 92 horsepower. The optional overhead-valve V6 boosted horsepower to 103 HP and came only with Cruise-O-Matic transmission. The standard engine was mated to a fully synchronized four-speed manual gearbox with floor shift lever. Another new change for 1976 was a choice of interior options which included vinyl or cloth-and-vinyl. Four new interior trim fabrics were available, along with new red interior color. Body styles included a 2-door sedan, 'three-door' Runabout hatchback, and two-door wagon.
